    In this episode, Sam Zhang, a photographer based in LA, shares her journey into photography and how she found her own style. She started taking pictures at a young age to capture memories and later studied photography in school. Sam worked as a portrait and wedding photographer for a few years, trying to please clients and follow trends.  However, she realized that she had lost her own artistic vision and decided to take a break from paid photography. Sam now focuses on shooting for fun and learning, rediscovering her love for photography.  Sam started her YouTube channel to practice her English and develop logical thinking skills. She enjoys the process of making videos and the sense of completion it brings. However, she struggles with balancing her passion for photography and filmmaking. Sam wants to create high-quality videos but also wants to have enough time to take photos. She finds it challenging to shoot both for videos and for personal projects. Sam is working on finding a balance between shooting for videos and shooting without a camera rolling.  In this final part of the conversation, the hosts ask Sam about her biggest portrait photography inspirations and her dream camera. Sam mentions photographers like Tim Walker, Richard Avedon, Peter Lindbergh, and Hiroshi Sugimoto as his inspirations.     James Hamilton, a photographer and former staff photographer for The Village Voice, shares his journey into photography and his experiences in the industry. He started as an assistant to a fashion photographer and learned on the job. He fell in love with street photography and decided to pursue a career in photography.  He hitchhiked across the country, taking pictures along the way, and eventually landed a job as a staff photographer for Crawdaddy. He later worked for The Village Voice in New York City. James preferred black and white photography and had his own darkroom.  He emphasized the importance of having trust and freedom from his editors. In this part of the conversation, James Hamilton discusses his experiences working as a photographer and the relationships he formed with editors and writers. He talks about the trust he gained from his colleagues, which allowed him to have creative freedom in choosing the photos he wanted to use. He also mentions the benefits of having staff positions, such as health benefits and job security. James shares stories of photographing famous individuals like Alfred Hitchcock and working on film sets with Wes Anderson.  He talks about his approach to photography and the importance of composition and capturing the moment.  James also mentions his ongoing project of digitizing his extensive collection of photographs. James also reflects on the decline of print media and the changes he witnessed during his career as a photojournalist. He shares stories of some of the wildest things he has captured on camera, including a bus tour of has-been performers and a Teamsters Convention.  James concludes by discussing his favorite cameras. He discusses the process of sourcing film equipment and the supportive film community. He mentions the availability of used machines, the option of service contracts, and the network of people who are knowledgeable and willing to help. He also talks about the vision for the shop and lab, where customers can buy cameras, film, and get their scans done. He emphasizes the importance of creating a positive and inviting space for local photographers. Christopher plans to incorporate his channel into documenting the journey of building the lab and creating educational and positive content.  He wants to find the humor and humanity in his cancer journey and use his creativity to make something impactful. Christopher reflects on his motivation to live a fulfilling life despite his illness. In this part of the conversation, Nick discusses how he modified his Graflex camera to shoot different film formats, including Polaroid and peel-apart film. He explains the convenience of shooting with the modified camera and how it allows him to shoot large format handheld. Nick also shares his experiences shooting with the Graflex camera on location. He shares his insights on sourcing peel-apart films and the challenges of finding affordable options.
