Ep. 72 - Being gay in East Africa - a coffee with Paul Canary Kanyamu

Like you, I’ve been watching in horror at the brutality of the laws that have been introduced in Uganda in recent months and seeing how these laws have affected the lives of our global LGBTIQA+ family in East Africa. I want to give a voice to those whose lives have been turned upside down by these laws and whose very lives are threatened by living outside of the closet. Come and join me and the amazing Paul Canary Kanyamu on this episode of Connection over Coffee with The Loneliness Guy, and let’s listen to how life is for our family in East Africa and what asks us to do to support our LGBTIQA+ family there. About Paul Canary Kanyamu: Paul Canary Kanyamu was born in western Uganda and he’s 26 years old. Paul’s a Humanitarian Volunteer and Human Rights Defender. He fights for and champions the rights of LGBTIQA+ persons including Queer Refugees. Paul is very active on LinkedIn and that’s how we found each other. He highlighted the struggles of living in Kakuma Refugee Camp and brought attention to the dangers to life experienced daily. He was resettled in Canada under that country’s refugee resettlement program in April 2023. Paul now wishes to study and gain his Master’s Degree in Social Work, International Development, and Disaster Management and continues to advocate for the welfare and wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ people in East Africa. Ep. 70 - Loneliness, connection & polyamory - a coffee with Kevin Martin

One of the great things about being gay and queer is that we can question and challenge the norms of the heterosexual society. This includes how we choose to define our relationships. This is true of exploring open relationships and polamory. Non-standard relationships can be a source of connection and loneliness. While exciting, it can feel like we’re not sure how to navigate relationships that serve us and help us feel connected. Come and join me and Kevin Martin on this episode of Connection over Coffee with The Loneliness Guy, and let’s get you some tools to navigate discussions about open relationships and polyamory. About Kevin Martin: Kevin is a gay farmer from northwest Ohio who's ventured into the world of psychology to live out his personal mission of helping people around the world know that they are loved. He's a mental health coach who operates his own private practice called SafeHaus Counseling & Coaching. Through his practice, he helps LGBTQ+ folx, particularly gay men, explore their mental well-being through such topics as sexual empowerment, open relationships and consensual non-monogamy, and radical self-care. He lives in Hawai’i and enjoys CrossFit, indoor rock climbing, and spending deep quality time with his friends and family. Ep. 68 - Loneliness & taking unsafe risks - a coffee with Dr Shayna Skakoon-Sparling

Loneliness drives your behaviours. We can want sexual connection so much that loneliness can make you and I take potentially unsafe risks in the hope to feel any kind of connection. You and I – indeed, the community – need to have a conversation about this so we live our lives as gay and queer men without putting ourselves at risk of HIV and STIs. I’ve found the perfect guest to join us for this episode. Dr Shayna Skakoon-Sparling works within our community to help you make better decisions for your sexual health and wellbeing. Come and join me and Dr Shayna now on this episode of Connection over Coffee with The Loneliness Guy, and let’s get you making less risky decisions when you’re feeling lonely. Grab a coffee in your favourite mug and join us now. About Dr Shayna Skakoon-Sparling: Professionally, Dr Shayna (she/her/elle) is an applied social psychologist and an incoming assistant professor in the psychology department at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. Her research explores the importance of social connection and how seeking social connection and intimacy can impact sexual health decision making among sexual minority men. For example, some of her work has examined how having sources of social support can buffer guys against the negative impact of sexual minority stress. Some of her other work looks at how trying to cope with loneliness can lead folks to agree to sex that isn't particularly fulfilling and that can put their health at risk – she’s currently working on a set of SSHRC-funded studies to explore this more deeply and to look at ways to help guys cope more effectively with loneliness.
