2. Rio's Trailblazing Women's House Women Resisting Violence

    • Documentary

Located in one of the largest favela complexes in Brazil, Rio’s Casa Das Mulheres is a haven for those leaving abusive relationships, in an area where police refuse to intervene. It’s also been a lifeline for the community during Covid, when many favela residents lost their jobs - as they've provided work and distributed food to starving families as well as dealing with a huge rise in domestic violence.

We hear from the founder of the Women’s House, Eliana Sousa Silva, and her colleagues from the NGO Networks of Maré, about the struggles the women of Maré face and how they’ve adapted to help each other and transform their neighbourhood in the face of government neglect.

Huge thanks to Eliana Sousa Silva, Julia Leal and Michele Gandra for sharing their stories with us.

Head to wrv.org.uk for more about the project and redesdamare.org.br to learn more about the Women’s House.

Louise Morris was the producer and writer, Renata Peppl the presenter.
Juliana Postico, Claudia Alves and Najlla Kay were the dubbing artists and Ella Barnes and Theodora Bradford our translators.

Featuring music by Rebeca Lane, Jonathan Panta, Rafael Rocha, Serena Assumpção and Gilberto Martins.

This podcast hopes to influence policy around gendered violence and highlight the lessons and voices of those working on the frontline - we’d be grateful if you could add a review and share it widely to help us achieve this.
