Uncomfortable with some of the viewpoints
28 May
I felt the podcast would present an interesting perspective on this story, and it did, but I realised that I’m not sure I’m comfortable with the centring of the wife’s pain over the suffering of a raped child. There was no blame placed on the child but there were times where the word “relationship” was used instead of “rape” or “assault” or “abuse,” this was uncomfortable listening. I realised I also wasn’t comfortable when listening to the conversation between the wife and the (now young woman) who had been sexually abused as a child; there was too much “oh yes I KNOW about that” from the wife when, in fact, her (admittedly appalling, heartbreaking) experiences aren’t comparable to the experiences of a child whose trust and body were violated by an adult in a position of responsibility. These two things are not the same, despite both being massive betrayals. At one point she thanked the young woman for speaking out and “literally saving my life because I was put in a really dangerous position” and it felt so inappropriate; as it did when she repeatedly said that she knew how the victim of CSA felt. I think there was plenty of value to this podcast and it made some really important points but, with hindsight, I think I probably should have realised that it might have been something that wouldn’t sit right - there was so much emphasis on the affairs/betrayal of his marriage that it definitely felt at times that it was drawing focus from the most important issue; the man is a paedophile.
Say the word rape
4 Nov
Confused why the word rape is never used in season 1, when an adult man assaults and rapes a child. They say language matters yet the word rape is NEVER used.
