Managing Up: How to Handle Your Difficult Manager

In this episode of the Burnout Made Me Do It podcast, Dr. Kim Hollingdale talks with talent consultant and bestselling author of 'Suddenly in Charge: Managing Up, Managing Down, Succeeding All Around',  Roberta Matuson, about how to 'manage up' and handle some classic 'difficult' manager behavior.  Managing up is a skill that we are NOT taught in college but one that's absolutely critical for survival and success in the workplace- understanding what drives your manager, and managing them to make your life easier at work . Listen in and learn how you can take more control over your working life. About our guest: For  more than 25 years, Roberta Matuson has been helping organizations  find, hire, grow, and keep top talent, saving them millions of dollars  that would otherwise be lost in the recruiting process, and achieve  dramatic growth because they have the best people. As  a former executive, Roberta has the vantage point of
understanding  what it’s like to work at all levels of an organization. At the age of  24, she found herself in the executive suite, where she was responsible  for building a world-class HR department for a commercial real estate  firm. Shortly thereafter, Roberta was involved in taking the company  through a public offering. She understands the frustrations of  employee turnover that many employees and leaders experience, and has  coached and consulted with many Fortune 500 and mid-size companies to  help them become a place where employees want to stay. Young and Burnt Out

Burnout can happen at any age, and today’s special guest joins us to talk about burnout in the mid-twenties and having a quarter-life crisis. Sonora Plumb is a playfulness coach and artist who helps people reconnect with their relationship with playfulness to counteract, burnout. She helps people learn to rest and not feel guilty about it, which is something that is very difficult for overachievers to accomplish. Sonora was an overachiever who started to have issues with her physical and mental health until she got so burned out that she couldn’t function.  This experience made her realize how much healing she had backlogged. Burnout made her confront deeper issues that were going on within herself. Her experiences with burnout inspired her to start coaching others, and she shares with us some of her concepts and philosophies. One of the most exciting is the concept of the “and” possibility: instead of choosing either or, you can choose ‘and’ You can have multiple things at once without choosing between your health and your success. Sonora offers a fresh perspective, both as someone who has experienced burnout and as a coach helping others work through the same experiences that she has had. She describes her personal journey You can access this episode transcription here. Leaving your agency job, with Helen Kartika

Helen is a Business Consultant and Certified Coach, passionate about working with business owners and ambitious professionals to cultivate greater inner confidence, overcome overwhelm, and face the limitations that are holding them back from taking action and achieving their goals. Before starting my career as a coach I worked in marketing and advertising for nearly a decade in Sydney, London, and Berlin. On paper, it seemed like I had a dream job, yet I was hugely unfulfilled and found myself constantly wondering, “Is this all life has to offer!?” After deciding to leave the corporate world behind to start my own marketing agency and my very first business, I dove head first into complete burnout. I thought starting my own business would give me more flexibility, freedom, and purpose, but guess what? It did the exact opposite. Suddenly, I found myself chained to my desk more than ever and now faced with a whole bunch of uncertainty, mindset blocks, and challenges. That I’d never experienced before in my secure corporate life. That’s when I embarked on my own journey to more balance and soon found a passion for wanting to help other business owners and ambitious professionals who might be facing the same challenges. Productive Laziness, with Cori McGinn

In this episode, we talk to special guest Cori McGinn, a program manager who experienced burnout after working a demanding job while simultaneously training for a half-Triathlon. As she pushed through this she experienced setbacks due to physical injuries as well. Cori was born with a condition that remained undetected throughout most of her life. The physical challenges she faced resulted in her needing surgery. After undergoing surgery, Cori still works with a physical therapist to correct her body's overcompensation. In today’s episode we explore the relationship between physical and mental obstacles, and how when we overcompensate for difficulties, whether physical or mental stressors, we often end up doing things that may be more damaging. Cori also shares her story of discovering Van life and her dream of building a van to escape burnout. After she visited a dealership with the sole purpose of only looking at vans, she ended up purchasing one. With no prior experience in construction or electrical work, Cori embarked on this project which had its fair share of challenges. Through extensive internet research, she was able to learn how to build a custom van. However, she also discovered that this project which was supposed to be a remedy for burnout soon became another stressor. Cori discusses her solutions for managing burnout, including being more conscious of her schedule and the time she spends with people.  She also has developed the ability to communicate with her coach when she needs mental and physical rest and allows herself time for that.  Last but not least, Cori talks about the importance of finding the correct work environment that supports well-being and you as an individual. Cori’s ultimate dream of managing burnout is to have a van that offers her the freedom to throw her bike in and just go! You can access this episode transcription here.
