Corinna and the King is the unbelievable true story of a love affair that brought the Spanish royal family to its knees. When Corinna, a worldly and well-connected businesswoman, fell in love with Juan Carlos I, the king of Spain, he seemed too big to fail. Their secret romance stretched across continents, but its unraveling would open a window into a dangerous world of greed, corruption, and crime. Vast pools of hidden wealth; international espionage and conspiracy; scandal, elephant hunting, and unstoppable lust… all tracing back to one of the most secretive royalties in the world. This is Corinna and the King, a co-production by Brazen, PRX and La Coctelera Music. Este podcast también está disponible en español. The narrative is a little like Desperate Housewives so can’t take it seriously at times. However interesting to hear her side which makes a lot of sense.
Gaslighting - this is a PR firm masquerading as investigative journalism
12/01/2023
Normally I don’t review podcasts, but I find this podcast particularly offensive to journalism and media in general. And this is an important matter. Breaching the deontological code of journalism, particularly in matters as important as corruption at the highest echelons, money laundering in an industrial scale, and the perpetuation of the cleptocracy which permeates our royal families and ruling classes… well, it’s offensive… and it’s dangerous… then again I can’t imagine anyone can consider this journalism, this is obviously a clumsy PR exercise, an attempt at gaslighting the public about some of the biggest frauds perpetrated against the Spanish people. It presents self serving arguments and cherry picked events as facts, often contradicting each other (ie: the emphasis on her professionalism, discretion, and constant looking over her shoulder… followed by fully trusting at face value, a character such as Villarejo… without any due diligence… in what was obviously a blackmailing exercise… by a well known blackmailer… a Google search would have provided that fact…). Don’t get me wrong… the Spanish king emeritus is a shameless thief, he’s always been corrupt and he’ll die corrupt to the core… it’s the family business, has been for generations, and seems to continue with at least one of his daughters… with the rest of his extended family shamelessly exploiting their privileges, influence and wealth syphoned from the country … but Corinne is no saint in this story, she’s not innocent, she’s not “normal”… this piece of “journalism” fails to mention her business for the full period she was with Juan Carlos, was almost exclusively with him or his business “partners” (collecting “commissions” under the guise of donations, gifts, “charitable” contributions, consultancy…), she shamelessly mentions refusing to launder money for the king in this €65m donation, when it was exactly that, a money laundering scheme… not the first one either, Corinna had been involved in the purchase of property from ill gotten gains by Juan Carlos, in the movement of money into tax havens, in brokering commissions … she just decided to keep this last, much larger “donation” … which is where the problems started… I have no antipathy for Corinna personally, in Spain they say you must forgive a thief who steals from another thief… in fact, in her greed and deceit, she has opened a conversation which was taboo and forbidden in Spain, has raised questions about an anachronistic institution made worse by endemic corruption and parasitism … and everyone (Spanish or not) should be grateful for that… but this… this isn’t journalism, this is utter rubbish… and it would be forgivable if this story was ephemeral or superficial… but this is important… you should be ashamed of yourselves… this is mercenary journalism at best, it’s PR… and it’s paid with dirty money…

Finding this podcast fascinating - a week feels like too long in between episodes!! Are any episodes available in Spanish?
Off-putting voiceover
19/12/2022
Entertaining story in a soap-opera way with a self-serving protagonist (hilariously says she’s not comfortable with Juan Carlos betrayal of her but airily glosses over his cheating Sofia by saying she knew what the was getting into when she married him; no mention of her business activities as organiser of rare animal hunts) but the narration is awful-amateur dramatics acting. I listened while ill-had I been well, I would have given up.
