In "Hardcore History" the very unconventional Dan Carlin takes his "Martian", outside-the-box way of thinking and applies it to the past. Was Alexander the Great as bad a person as Adolf Hitler? What would Apaches with modern weapons be like? Will our modern civilization ever fall like civilizations from past eras? This is a difficult-to-classify show that has a rather sharp edge. It's not for everyone. But the innovative style and approach has made "Dan Carlin's Hardcore History" a New Media hit.

Politics, diplomacy, revolution and mutiny take center stage at the start of this episode, but mud, blood, shells and tragedy drown all by the end.
-
Hardcore History 53 - Blueprint for Armageddon IV

Hardcore History 547 - EXTRA Wrath of the Khans
More military history. More quintessentially "Dan" twists. More deep questions. In this "Director's Cut" style addendum to HH 47 you get all that, plus cutting-room floor stuff and Dan talking about the challenges this episode posed and why he made "Wrath of the Khans" the way he did.

Hardcore History 47 - Wrath of the Khans V
Succession issues weaken the Mongol Empire as the grandchildren of Genghis Khan fight over their imperial inheritance. This doesn't stop them from dealing out pain, suffering, and ironically good governance while doing so.

Hardcore History 46 - Wrath of the Khans IV
The death of Genghis Khan, the founder of the Mongol Empire, should have slowed the momentum of Mongol conquests, but instead it accelerated it. This time though, all of Europe is on the Mongol hit list.

As Real as it Gets
As Dan has mooted before, what need is there on film of Hollywood rehashes and reboots of dead franchises when history is so rich in fascinating stories and characters? Every episode of his expertly narrated podcast gives us the stories of a vast cast of historical figures, their circumstances and how we might better understand them when released from the confines of contemporary prejudices. I’d go one question further: what need do we have of film when one man and a microphone can give us more colour and detail than 120 minutes of dumbed down blockbuster fodder? The accounts are often brutal in length and nature, but never less than compelling. I wasn’t much into history till I heard about HH but Dan gives us the perspective that countless history teachers could not, and I’m hooked. This man is a national treasure.
My gosh he was young
It’s like fifteen more episodes of hardcore history, what more could you ask for.
