We’d like to introduce you to a new podcast. It’s called Different. But why different?
You know how when you’re wearing sunglasses it puts a tint on everything? Or if you wear glasses you see some things in focus and others out of focus?
Well, we all have lenses on the inside of our head too. And they tint, colour and shape everything we see, think and understand.
So, on this podcast Steve Chalke and Jill Rowe are going to dive headlong into just that as they discover a new ‘meaning making’ story and embrace a fresh way of thinking about life, the universe and everything in-between.
They will talk about getting to a place where we see our lives as part of something bigger than our day-to-day experience - becoming a part of an unfolding story. Finding joy in ordinary moments, facing failure and struggle and discovering liberation and purpose.
They’ll also discuss experiencing life as a gift and learning how to live on purpose. They’ll be peering into dark nights of the soul and finding hope. And simply learning how we are here to walk each home.
We hope you enjoy these conversations – discovering a new story and embracing new thinking.

    Why lament really matters

    Why lament really matters

In this episode of the Different podcast, Steve Chalke and I talk about why lament really matters, especially when we are surrounded on every side by seeming chaos. and the 24 hour news cycle. We chat about how to find our way when things seem out of control. And we think about discovering a healthy practice of lemon, through which we can help and support one another. As we go through disruption. We realise that lament is a sacred and holy act. So instead of despising it, see that we can grow through it and find the courage we need to help create a better and more generous world. It felt like this conversation really mattered.

Choosing to turn and face, not run and hide

Choosing to turn and face, not run and hide

In this episode of the Different podcast, Steve Chalke and I talk about the human instinct to keep our distance from what is hard or challenging or doesn’t make sense. Via talk of playing hockey, having asthma, and wondering how God would figure in a game of Top Trumps, we chat about the way some beliefs leave us unable to manage the joy and pain of life and actually cause us harm rather than helping us. And we think through where God might be in all of this. This was a hope-filled, honest and enlightening conversation – we trust you will find it helpful and hopeful too.

From Buber to Elmo – learning to love ourselves and others

From Buber to Elmo – learning to love ourselves and others

In this episode of the Different podcast Steve Chalke and I explore how are struggle to like and love others is connected to our struggle to like and love ourselves. We talk about the work of the philosopher, Martin Buber, and reflect on a tweet from Elmo of Sesame Street fame. We explore the impact that knowing we are loved by others can have on what we believe about ourselves. And, reflecting on the words of Anthony de Mello, we consider the invitation to behold the one beholding us and smiling and try and understand how we can be a conduit for the divine in our relationships with others and how this can change everything.

    VUCA Part Two

    VUCA Part Two

In this episode of the Different podcast Steve Chalke and I continue our conversation about how we can bring an end to the descending spiral of violence through the building of diverse, inclusive community wherever we are, recognising our absolute need as human beings to belong to and with others. It's built into our DNA and it’s what it means to be fully human and flourishing. So, - it’s interdependence not independence. Belonging not separation. Inclusion and not exclusion. Our prayer is that this conversation brings you hope and the belief that a different kind of world really is possible.

    VUCA Part One

    VUCA Part One

In this episode of the Different podcast Steve Chalke and I explore how all behaviour is communication. We dive into the news, trying to make sense of what is happening now by seeing how trauma impacts individuals and whole people groups. We recognise how trauma that we don’t deal with deals with us. And we try to work out how we can surface trauma, talking and listening to the pain on both sides of the table and so bring peace into the world, all with a holy imagination. This was part one of an important conversation. It’s a conversation we all need to keep having. We hope and pray you find it helpful.

    Forgiveness the Gateway to Freedom

    Forgiveness the Gateway to Freedom

I'm Jill Rowe, and in this episode of the different podcast, Steve Chalke and I chat about forgiveness and grudges. We talk openly and honestly about times in our own lives when forgiveness has been something we have made our way to.
Having realised that unforgiveness was toxic, we describe how forgiveness is in fact a gateway to freedom and come to see that Jesus was inviting us to discover our own healing. When we forgive our enemies, we chat about how to live into the future rather than using the past as our reference point. This discussion was a great reminder of why forgiveness is such a profoundly powerful force for good and for transformation. May it bring goodness and hope to you.
