Esnatt Gondwe-Matekesa: GiveDirectly The Purpose Made Podcast

    • Business

In his book, The End of Poverty, Jeffrey Sachs made some careful estimates as to what it would cost to end extreme poverty in the world in about 20 years. Sachs calculated that the total cost per year would be about $175 billion. This represented less than one percent of the combined income of the richest countries in the world. In fact, this cost is 0.7% of the total income of the 30 countries who comprised OECD in 2005.
Fast forward to 2022, an estimated 698 million people, or 9% of the global population, are living in extreme poverty, with the overwhelming majority living on less than $1.90 a day. By 2030, 167 million children will live in extreme poverty if the world doesn’t act.
This is where my guest today comes in.
