How we can build new things minus the environmental impact - Superuse

How we can build new things minus the environmental impact - Superuse

Were you also confused reading this title? It seems a bit contradictory doesn't it, to claim that you can create new infrastructure without the energy and material requirements? Well, it is not technically true, but we can certainly come much closer than is currently accepted industry-wise!

This is where Superuse Studios comes in. Superuse focuses on circular architecture, meaning that their starting materials have already been start, middle and end materials, and would have otherwise been thrown away.

Superuse sees the value of these raw materials, like wood, concrete, or even wind turbines, and uses them innovatively to create a memorable space, for its low environmental impact as well as its eye-catching looks.

For our last episode of Green Career Talks, I got the chance to speak with Jos de Krieger from Superuse. We chatted about how Superuse fits into BlueCity, a Rotterdam-based 'example city' for a circular future, what lead to Jos joining Superuse himself, and some key tips he shared for any young person looking for a career in sustainability (that's you!).

It has been a pleasure making these talks, we hope you all were able to learn something about the many opportunities in sustainability and maybe even find a startup you might be working with later on!

    Happy listening!

For more information about BlueCity (an initiative deserving of its own interview if we are being honest here!), visit their website: https://www.bluecity.nl/

Using bacteria to fight malnutrition - Spireaux

Using bacteria to fight malnutrition - Spireaux

Ever tried Spirulina powder, that green so-called 'superfood' that has such an off-putting taste that you would rather just be deemed unhealthy?

Well, hear me out here, you need to try fresh Spirulina paste, boasting all the nutritional benefits with a neutral taste and smell! This incredible product is very environmentally friendly to produce, but it is still a relatively unknown product.

Luckily, there is someone working almost singlehandedly to change this! Meet Tim van Koolwijk, the founder of Spirueax, which does just this, making fresh Spirulina paste in a photo bio-reactor with the help of a cyanobacterium.

Today I chatted with Tim about the inspiration behind his innovative product, its ability to revolutionize societal food consumption in terms of environmental impact, his own TU Delft background, and the most exciting part of Spireaux's future!

For more information head over to https://spireaux.com/

Can we use robots to save energy? - Qlayers

Can we use robots to save energy? - Qlayers

Want to help save the planet, but not convinced in a green career unless you are also designing and building robots?
In that case, Qlayers is the startup for you!

Qlayers is a high-tech Delft startup, using robots to apply industrial coatings intelligently and efficiently. While it might initially seem a bit strange to call this a sustainable startup, making any process carried out on such a massive scale more efficient can reduce huge amounts of emissions, and save money at the same time!

Simon Gamme from Qlayers spoke with me today about the complex but fascinating projects Qlayers is working on, about how they could perhaps be made even more sustainable. Along with this he shared the main things he would tell his younger self if he could, and three main tips to anybody, robot-lover or otherwise, about searching and finding a career in sustainability.

To stay up to date on what Qlayers is up to, be sure to check out their website at https://www.qlayers.com/

And of course, don't forget to join us for the next episode of Green Career Talks, brought to you with green love by GreenTU Career (a lot of 'green', I know)!

The power that is biochar - Pyropower

The power that is biochar - Pyropower

Hey there! Are you an coffee drinker?
By common sense, you are probably also a coffee-ground dumper, in your trash or maybe even in your compost!
Ever wondered if there was anything else you could do with your coffee grounds apart from exfoliating your skin or fertilizing your garden?

Pyropower is a Delft-born startup which produces biochar, a charcoal-like material made by burning organic matter, like your coffee grounds. Biochar also turns out to be a secret wonder when it comes to fertilizing plants, and not only this, the creation of biochar is a carbon negative process, reducing overall CO2 in the atmosphere.

In this episode, Thomas Merdassi spoke with me about just what exactly he is working on at the moment, and how he came to be a student entrepreneur. We also discussed the exciting possibilities for Pyropower in the future!

For more information on biochar and the other incredible things Pyropower is up to, be sure to check out their website at https://www.pyropower.eu/

What is the battery of the future? - AquaBattery

We all know that society needs to move towards more sustainable sources of energy, but how are we supposed to store it all? Shouldn't sustainable storage, using as many recyclable materials as possible, be equally important?

Join Marissa as she chats with Emil Goosen from AquaBattery, the Netherlands-based startup giving power to water- literally. AquaBattery uses scarcely two ingredients, salt and water, to create a flow battery, providing the world's cleanest energy storage solution.

They have a conversation about what is the most exciting part of Emil's work, his origins, and the pretty incredible things in store for Aquabattery in the future.

Check out AquaBattery at https://aquabattery.nl/ for more information!

So what are you waiting for?
Have a listen, and who knows, you might just find your ideal career-opportunity!
