It was supposed to be a reality show with a twist. In a sun-drenched villa in Ibiza, six hot guys compete for a cash prize and for the love of the beautiful and mysterious Miriam. It’s meant to be her big break: the moment she becomes the superstar she was born to be. But this is the era of “cruel reality TV” and the show producers have a different goal: they want to surprise the men with the fact that Miriam is trans. A new six-episode investigative series from Wondery, the makers of The Shrink Next Door and The Apology Line, and from Novel, HARSH REALITY is the story about love, lies, reality TV and a woman before her time: Miriam Rivera. Written by Agnes Borinsky and hosted by Trace Lysette. interesting story bad narration
16/06/2023
im not sure if it was the script or the narration but it all felt so clunky, like it was the first read through. It didn’t feel authentic at all. Still, really good to go so in depth into a particularly odd and particularly memorable moment in reality TV.
Excellent

Fantastic, searing, eye opening podcast about the dangers of reality TV and the othering and fetishisation of trans people.
Unnecessary paywall

Why is this only available on plus when it was recorded and released years ago? Also so many ads for such a short episode.
Blame Game
5 Jan
I hadn’t heard of this show and wouldn’t have watched it anyway. All these years later for the producer to still try to blame the men was astounding. They used Miriam for their own ends as well as the other contestants, how they thought this was okay defies belief. Without wanting to spoil he’s a couple of tasters: it’s really disrespectful to misgender someone, but fine to go to a club with midgets hanging from the ceiling. The best one: I really value my honesty and integrity, that’s why I’m selling my story to The Sun. Oh Lordy. Now we know Mexicans, like their neighbours over the border, don’t do irony.
