From Wondery and Goalhanger Podcasts, Afua Hirsch and Peter Frankopan tell the wild stories of some of the most extraordinary men and women ever to have lived – and ask whether they have the rep they deserve. Should Nina Simone’s role in the civil rights movement be more celebrated than it is? When you find out what Picasso got up to in his studio, can you still admire his art? Was Napoleon a hero or a tyrant - or both? (And, while we’re at it, was he even short?) Legacy is the show that looks at big lives from the perspective of now – and doesn’t always like what it sees. Refreshing views of history that reframe the present
21 Nov
Hirsch and Frankopan are fantastic choices as co-hosts of this long-lens-of-history view, which brings together systemic-level discussion, engaging dramatisation, refreshing opinion, intellectual rigour in their assessments and lighter scenario-ising. Of course there are some personal biases and, in my opinion, far too much of a charitable summation of some of the monstrous figures discussed. This is also a simplified and broadly accessible presentation of history - not a stuffy linear reading of the usual tedious and myopic histories conventionally espoused. So sad to see other listeners’ petty, twitchy, self-serving and one dimensional views of history and politics, leading to leaving salty and immature reviews as their worldviews are uncomfortably challenged. I’m personally excited by the potential for growth in that discomfort. Highly recommend.
Information biased

Massive chunks of history missed out of every podcast. Most of which is the personal, impressive, positive parts of these figures legacy. Definitely not historically accurate. Cherry picked information to fit a narrative.
So close, but so far.

I really, really wanted to like this podcast, and made it through 4 series before giving up. Everything seems to be viewed through the prism of race, empire and inequality when it doesn’t need to be. I’m sure if they did a podcast about Sherry Trifle they would say it has the stench of imperialism to it. Too much personal opinion is injected, certainly the series about Rhodes. The long time tearing down Rhodes, to gloss over Magabe with the lightest of touches as though he was some champagne socialist. Huge potential in what they are doing, and the subject matter is well chosen, but the personal bias in the delivery spoils what could have been.
Just Afual

Despite the low rating, I decided to give a few episodes a try. Unfortunately, I only managed to get through one and a half because Afua Hirsch is utterly unbearable. She has a bossy, hectoring tone and the hypocrisy/cognitive dissonance in a lot of her first year undergrad level self-absorbed preaching and self-perpetuating victimhood (despite her enormous privilege) made this pod a hard listen. If you want to know what it was like, just imagine the most opinionated posh garl in the Junior Common Room reading Guardian op eds aloud, in a braying private school accent, forever. One star is being over generous and it would have been a zero if I’d had the option. 👎
