Samantha & Elliot Archuleta – How Prioritizing Face-to-Face Interactions Can Combat Social Atrophy in the Digital Age

In a world where surface-level connections on social media have become the norm, Samantha and Elliot Archuleta of the Something More Human podcast are leading the charge to bring meaningful human connection back into our lives. During their conversation on LOA Today, Sam and Elliot shared their journey from artists seeking collaboration to launching a podcast and phone-free events series called Return to Real Life.

Through their work, they’ve noticed the negative impacts of excessive smartphone use, including social atrophy as our social skills decline from lack of in-person interaction. “It took moving to sort of realize that to sort of step outside the bubble, and look back and see wow, like we actually have an incredible community back in Albuquerque,” Elliot reflected. Their sold-out Return to Real Life event in Albuquerque proved that people are craving real human connection without the distraction of phones.

The panel discussed how phones have become a “crutch” and “shortcut to safety” to avoid discomfort and vulnerability. But as Jodie Lynn Craven pointed out, “There’s another kind of safety when we find people that we really have a deep connection with. And there are those spaces where we can be vulnerable.” Fostering vulnerability requires trust and intentionality – consciously choosing where to direct our energy and attention each moment.

Through leading thoughtful discussions and facilitating phone-free gatherings, Sam, Elliot and their community are demonstrating that prioritizing face-to-face interactions can help reverse the effects of social atrophy in our increasingly digital world. Their mission inspires us to reflect on our own phone usage and how we can support meaningful connections in our lives.

    Nothing happens until something moves

    Nothing happens until something moves

Life presents us with uncertainties and fears on a daily basis. How do we navigate these turbulent waters with poise and determination? Joel and Walt delved into this profound question in their thought-provoking discussion.

When Joel’s son was accidentally shot, his immediate reaction showed the power of taking action in the face of fear. “I knew I needed to go to the hospital,” Joel recalled. By driving his son to get medical help, Joel took a positive step that likely eased his son’s recovery.

Throughout their conversation, Joel and Walt emphasized the importance of combining mindset with action. As Joel said, “The right mindset combined with action is where the power exists.” By preparing our perspective each morning, we can face challenges from a place of strength and opportunity.

Yet how do we break free from negative thought patterns that hold us back? Walt posed this question insightfully. By diving deep into difficult experiences, he suggested, we eventually reach our limit and say “I want something different.” This realization fuels the action needed for change.

Death itself emerged as a profound mystery. While the human body dies, Walt and Joel agreed, our energy and consciousness live on eternally. As Joel said, “We are energy, and energy can’t be contained.” With this expansive view, even loss points to future growth.

Throughout their wide-ranging exchange, Joel and Walt encouraged embracing life’s rapid changes with curiosity instead of fear. In a time of technological upheaval, their optimism for the future serves as an inspiration. By taking action each day with a positive mindset, we can navigate life’s uncertainties and discover our highest potential.

How to Stop Fear's Momentum and Shift Your Vibration

How to Stop Fear's Momentum and Shift Your Vibration

Have you ever felt fear taking over your day-to-day life? Walt and Anne-Marie know that feeling all too well. In their conversation, they discussed how fears can build their own momentum if left unchecked. Walt shared how fears were impacting one of his employees at work, dealing with legitimate stresses.

But Walt and Anne-Marie also recognized that we generate our own fears. As Anne-Marie pointed out, we need to spot our fears first before we can do anything about them. Once noticed, the next step is questioning if situations are really worth getting caught up in fear over. Walt emphasized the importance of taking conscious steps to recognize and change negative thought patterns.

Our environment also plays a role in feeding our fears. Walt noticed how guests not showing up for their radio show seemed to manifest more of the same due to the energy it created. Anne-Marie shared how inflation fears were fueled by constant media attention and personal experiences. They agreed that shifting attention away from such negativity is key.

When it comes to daily decision-making, fears can take over. Walt discussed emotional grocery shopping and how focusing on higher quality organic options, despite the price, led to feeling and performing better overall. For Anne-Marie, reframing her mindset from fear to seeing unanswered questions as learning opportunities helped reduce stress at her new job.

Walt and Anne-Marie also offered strategies for managing political fears. Walt laughed about strongly shifting his once polarized views, now seeing the absurdity in taking things too seriously. For Anne-Marie, sitting on the fence to consider multiple perspectives helps avoid getting too triggered. They concurred it’s best to disengage from stubbornly opinionated people.

Overall, Walt and Anne-Marie emphasized the importance of recognizing triggers, focusing on what’s truly important like family, and shifting attention to positivity. Making small positive decisions each day can lead to significant life changes over time. Most importantly, they encourage embracing life’s contrasts and unexpected twists, finding deeper meaning in challenges along the way.

A Lesson in Priorities from Martha’s Stroke

A Lesson in Priorities from Martha’s Stroke

Charlene Byar’s friend, Belinda will never forget the day her mother Martha had a stroke. In an instant, everything changed. Martha had always been so full of life and energy. For Belinda, to see her now in the hospital bed, struggling to recover, was heartbreaking.

The conversation started without Charlene as Jodie Lynn and Walt found themselves without a scheduled guest. So they started off on a winding, random walk into an exploration of ourselves and our connection to others.

Halfway through, Charlene made a surprise appearance, and so they shifted the conversation.

That’s when Charlene told us about Martha. She described how Martha’s stroke has been a blessing in disguise. It has given Charlene a much-needed perspective adjustment. Charlene used to work all the time, missing out on precious moments with loved ones. But now, she realizes what really matters – the people in our lives.

Jodie Lynn and Walt understood Charlene’s revelation all too well. They discussed their own life lessons around priorities. Jodie Lynn reflected on past struggles, realizing in hindsight that she was always supported. Walt questioned whether challenges are truly random, or part of a higher plan.

Through open conversations like this, we can all gain perspective. As Belinda said, “This slows you in your tracks.” A health scare is a reminder of our mortality. But it also reminds us what really counts – the connections that make life worth living. We must appreciate each day and the people in it. As Charlene now knows, that is true wealth that can never be taken away.

Robert A. Crothers: The Raw Honesty of Sharing Our Stories - Finding Connection Through Life's Lessons

Robert A. Crothers: The Raw Honesty of Sharing Our Stories - Finding Connection Through Life's Lessons

How often do we pause to appreciate the intricate threads that weave together our personal histories? On a recent episode of LOA Today, guest Robert Crothers offered listeners a meaningful gift through sharing his own winding journey.

With endearing humor, Robert transported us back to his childhood exploring the Massachusetts coast. We laughed along to tales of teenage hijinks and followed the blossoming of young love on a fateful train ride. Yet beneath the lighthearted moments lay a deeper message: through opening our hearts and linking arms with our shared humanity, we can find connection in even unlikely places.

Robert's discussion with host Walt and guest Anne-Marie reinforced how family stories have power to breathe life into those who came before. By recording precious memories that could otherwise fade, we preserve a piece of ourselves for future generations.

As the interview drew to a close, Walt thanked Robert for not only the entertaining anecdotes but for the reminder that each individual story adds richness to the tapestry of our shared experience. In discussing hopes to spread more cheer through retirement home visits, Robert left us pondering how to better express appreciation in the present.

By so generously sharing hard-won wisdom and lessons of the heart, Robert gifted listeners with timely motivation. May we each strive to document our own histories, for in doing so we strengthen the bonds of understanding between all people.

From Chaos to Fulfillment: Brittany Sandoval’s Journey to Self-Connection

From Chaos to Fulfillment: Brittany Sandoval’s Journey to Self-Connection

“Your adversity is your opportunity,” Brittany Sandoval reminds us. And what an opportunity she has found after facing immense adversity in her young life. After experiencing trauma and addiction as a teen, Brittany emerged determined to help others through her work as a lactation consultant and inclusive infant feeding educator.

But it was in connecting deeply with families that Brittany recognized a need for resources helping those “parenting differently” after breaking generational cycles or trauma. This inspired her podcast “The Odd Mom Pod,” a community for unique perspectives where Brittany interviews parents and professionals. Through open sharing, Brittany aims to reach anyone seeking connection.

Brittany’s own journey of self-discovery led her from organized religion to a spiritual focus on vulnerability and helping others through struggles. “I believe we’re all connected in some way,” she reflects. For Brittany, true fulfillment comes from meeting one’s needs through self-awareness, acceptance and intentional action – regardless of circumstances.

Co-hosts Walt and Jodielynn resonate with Brittany’s message. Jodielynn highlights Brittany’s resilience in thriving after business betrayal. And Walt praises Brittany’s emergence from trauma with new coping skills and drive to help others do the same.

Brittany’s foster parenting experience underscores trauma’s lessons when handled with understanding. By acknowledging boundaries while maintaining care, former foster youth find stability. Brittany dreams of a nonprofit spreading this healing to shelters nationwide.

Through open-hearted connection, Brittany, Walt and Jodielynn uncover deeper insights. Jodielynn reflects on trauma’s silver linings, while Brittany leaves us empowered to transform adversity through resilience, community and action.
