The breast cancer journey and how health policy is helping.
...today, Dawn Butler MP chats to Stephanie O’Brien.
Stephanie was inspired by my breast cancer screening campaign #FindTheMillion – to go along to a screening. When she did, she discovered she had stage 1 cancer in her right breast. She had the lump removed and had radiotherapy.
In our final episode of this series today, we’ll be hearing her story, and discussing the current health policy around breast cancer. And I’ll give you an update on where my journey is and what’s next for me.

*In 2020 to 2021, almost a million fewer women in England were screened for breast cancer and Breast Cancer Now estimated that as of May 2022, almost 8,000 people in England were living with undiagnosed breast cancer largely because of screening disruption. The latest NHS England Cancer Waiting Times 31-day data (for August 2023) indicate that there are now an estimated 5,962 missing breast cancer diagnoses which are not in the system due to the impact of COVID.

"I didn't look at my breasts every day, it just caught my eye" - with Dr Liz O’Riordan

"I didn't look at my breasts every day, it just caught my eye" - with Dr Liz O’Riordan

Mammograms and breast cancer: the myths, the facts and the details of what it’s really like...
...today, Dawn Butler MP chats to Dr Liz O’Riordan.
She's a Consultant Oncoplastic Surgeon at Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust. In 2015, at the age of 40, Liz was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer, which is somewhat ironic as she's a breast cancer surgeon. In the last few months, she had a local recurrence and has started treatment for it.

She started blogging about her experiences as a doctor and a patient - and wrote ‘the Complete Guide to Breast Cancer’ in 2018. She's got her own podcast called ‘So Now I’ve Got Breast Cancer’ and her new memoir ‘Under the Knife’ was released last month.
