A (Scary) Dream Come True

Nightmare magazine is an excellent horror story podcast from the team behind Lightspeed Magazine. I’ve been a long time listener of Lightspeed and so was expecting the same high standard of stories. I was not disappointed. The first two stories, ‘Property Condemned’ by Jonathan Maberry and ‘Frontier Death Song’ by Laird Barron, are excellent cosmic horror and at an hour long have time build a good sense of atmosphere and become truly immersive. The audio quality is exceptional, and the narrators using different accents and tones of voice to bring the stories to life. I was also impressed by the tasteful use of sound effects in Frontier Death Song, in this case the sound of a demonic hunting horn. Sound effects can be a double edged sword in a story reading. Use too many and they spoil the atmosphere the writers words were already creating. In this case however, they subtly highlight a key detail from the story, which adds to the experience. Well done guys, I think you have found the right balance here. It seems that we have been spoiled for good story podcasts lately with the arrival of Tales to Terrify, Protecting Project Pulp, and now Nightmare. However, it’s nice to see that rather than competing for audience attention, the creators involved are willing to promote each other, swap narrators or recordings and otherwise help each other out (you can imagine what would happen if two TV channels of horror programming came out at the same time). How refreshing for competitors to respect each other, and to respect their audiences. So in conclusion, if you have even a passing interest in horror, you should give this podcast a go.
