Dolly Parton's "Jolene" with Andy Richter

Dolly Parton's "Jolene" with Andy Richter

In 1973, Dolly Parton released her seminal track “Jolene”. In the years that have followed, the song has been reinterpreted and reimagined by many artists including Olivia Newton John, Miley Cyrus, Lil Nas X, the White Stripes, and, of course, Beyonce. On this episode of One Song, LUXXURY and Diallo Riddle are joined by comedy legend Andy Richter to talk through the history and impact of this singular anthem, and the many Jolenes.

Tears for Fears' "Head Over Heels"

Tears for Fears' "Head Over Heels"

This time on One Song Diallo Riddle and LUXXURY not only tackle a song that, arguably, possesses the ultimate accolade: It is Diallo’s favorite song to sing at karaoke. “Head Over Heels” by Tears for Fears is not the British synth pop group’s biggest hit – that would be “Mad World”, “Sowing the Seeds of Love”, or “Shout” – but Diallo makes a strong case for why there’s no better song to belt out at 2am in a karaoke booth. Join the guys as they break open the stems and walk through the song’s unforgettable melody and haunting lyrics in a special episode that was shot in the Hartbeat podcast studio after a sustainable makeover.

As part of the makeover, soy-based products were used, including chairs upholstered with the soy-based material produced by Modern Meadow, wall mounted photographs printed with soy-based ink, and upcycling a drum into a coffee table with wood supplied by HempWood, which contains soy-based resin.

This episode was produced with the support of US Soy.

    De La Soul's "Buddy"

    De La Soul's "Buddy"

Back in the late 80s gangsta rap was booming. But three kids from Long Island emerged to spread a message of peace, love, and unity. Those three kids -- Posdnuos, Maseo, and Trugoy the Dove -- were De La Soul and together they broadened the perception of hip hop: They made it funny, weird, and psychedelic. This time on One Song, Diallo Riddle and LUXXURY break down “Buddy” from De La Soul’s seminal album Three Feet High and Rising.

Love from London!

Such a great podcast to listen to that isn’t too overly preachy on the musical front!!! As a musician it’s nice to hear other musicians just fool around with their instrumental and samples lol 🩷

Quest love on Public enemy’s ‘Cold lamping’

Great show as always! Lots of stuff you know.. lots of stuff you don’t! Presented by the always fun hosts. As this whole show is about nerding out, it would be remiss of me not to point out a few corrections -this is a safe space I hope.

I’d like to thank the ‘oracal’ that is Quest love for gifting the UK with a whole new subculture called ‘Northern Funk’. Apparently championed by Norman Cook! Who knew? Perhaps he meant Northern soul ( Cook being a big fan) That really started in the mid seventies UK and was a scene of populated by young working class kids. Whole other podcast. By my estimation, Norman Cook was about 10 years old then- so a true child musical savant apparently. Didn’t the Roots live in the UK for a while?

Also the connection between Spice girls Mel B and public enemy is that Eddie Murphy and Chuck D were friends before Public Enemy. Murphy went on to Marry and divorce Mel B. There single Wannabe doesn’t sample any of James Brown’s fantastic drummers.

All show are definitely worth you ear time. Enjoy!

Thanks guys

Open your ears!

This podcast is definitely a must for lovers of music. I just came across this podcast and simply just enjoy the enthusiasm and knowledge Diallo and Luxxury put into each episode. I absolutely love hearing the isolation of each instrument and vocals that has contributed to make any of the songs played a classic; all the while the hosts give you tidbits of analysis as they breakdown the song. As I love listening to my favourite songs across many genres I love hearing the nuances that I can pick up as I play them over again, but this podcast has already and most definitely got me to open my ears and take more notice to how a song has come together, carefully listening to each vocal and instrument that makes me appreciate the song even more than I thought I did. Thank you!
