173: How Polysaccharides Improve Brain Health with Dr. John E. Lewis

173: How Polysaccharides Improve Brain Health with Dr. John E. Lewis

John E. Lewis, Ph.D. is the Founder and President of Dr Lewis Nutrition™ and past full-time Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He is also a Diplomat, Faculty Member, and Advisor of the Medical Wellness Association.  He is a lecturer for the Institute for Brain Potential.  He has been the principal investigator of over 30 different studies in his research career. During that time, he either directly raised or indirectly supported raising over $23 million in grants, gifts, and contracts for research studies and clinical trials and educational programs for medical students. Much of his research has focused on evaluating the effects of nutrition, dietary supplementation, and exercise on various aspects of human health and disease.

In addition to his research, Dr. Lewis has been an invited national and international lecturer at conferences and workshops and as a guest on television shows, where he discusses the findings of his research and provides guidance and recommendations as an expert in the field of health and wellness. He has over 180 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals, where his work has first appeared in print, including some of the leading scientific journals, such as AIDS and Behavior, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, American Journal of Public Health, Journal of the International AIDS Society, Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, Nutrition and Cancer: An International Journal, Sports Medicine, Stroke, The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, and The Gerontologist. He has also mentored many different students, from undergraduates to post-doctoral trainees, in how to conduct clinical research and how to apply the principles of health promotion into daily practice.  His seminal publication in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease from his Alzheimer’s study not only spurred him to leave academics and pursue a science-based business career, but also enabled him to be selected for a widely-acclaimed TEDxMiami talk about how dietary supplementation can improve brain health.
Dr. Lewis also embodies the model of health and wellness by eating a whole-food, plant-based diet for over 27 years, taking certain key dietary supplements, and through a rigorous, daily exercise training program. John has a passion for educating others about the value of nutrition, exercise, and health, and he will continue to study the application of clinical nutrition for the benefit of mankind.

171: Using Perfectionism to Mask Depression with Dr. Margaret Rutherford

171: Using Perfectionism to Mask Depression with Dr. Margaret Rutherford

Margaret Robinson Rutherford Ph.D., a clinical psychologist with thirty years of experience, is also an author, TedX speaker, and podcast host. Her book, Perfectly Hidden Depression: How to Break Free from the Perfectionism That Masks Your Depression, has reached thousands here in the US, as well as having an international impact, with translations reaching from Korea to Italy, Turkey to Germany. Her highly popular podcast, The SelfWork Podcast, has been continuously rated as one of the best podcasts for mental health and depression, and her TedX talk hit the top 50 in 2023.
Dr. Margaret’s known for her vibrantly engaging and theoretically well-crafted presentations, whether live or virtual. Whether her diverse audiences are made up of mental health professionals, construction workers, or office managers, her passionate message is that healthy mental and emotional lives can be created through becoming more transparent with one another. Sharing who you really are with those you trust is a huge step toward connection and good mental health. Rates of depression and suicide are skyrocketing. And there’s something we can do!
She’s further challenging the mental health profession to question their overreliance on the official symptom checklist for diagnosis. Instead, we need to create normalcy around suicidal feelings, listen to each person’s actual experience of their life, and respond with safety and compassion, rather than stigmatizing this very real and excruciatingly painful part of human existence.
*Though I usually don't do this, I wanted to be sure to put in a content warning here for discussion of self-harm and suicide.*
    In this episode, we cover:
    - how she pivoted from a career in music to psychology
    - why people use perfectionism to mask depression
    - the story behind her book - Perfectly Hidden Depression: How to Break Free from the Perfectionism That Masks Your Depression
    - how you can start to express and accept yourself

168: The Role of Nutrition in Mental Health Treatment with Dr. Nicole O'Barto-Trainer

168: The Role of Nutrition in Mental Health Treatment with Dr. Nicole O'Barto-Trainer

Nicole received her doctorate in counseling psychology from West Virginia University. She was clinically trained in the Department of Psychiatry at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. She also has specialized training in the integration of mind-body therapies in the treatment of chronic gastrointestinal disorders and somatic disorders from the Allegheny Center for Digestive Health. Dr. Trainer has been studying integrative mental health since 2009 and has advanced training in mindfulness-based interventions, HeartMath biofeedback, and functional approaches to depression and anxiety, including nutrition, micronutrient therapy, and amino acid therapy.
Dr. Trainer has been working in private practice since 2011. She founded Native with the intention to shift the conversation in mental health care away from deficits and subjective lists of symptoms treated largely with pharmaceuticals to one focused on innate health and the integration of evidence-based complementary and alternative therapies. Further, Dr. Trainer believes that a more dynamic and holistic approach to mental health treatment would better prepare an individual for the lifelong process of understanding their emotional self and taking care of their mental health.
Dr. Trainer is also passionate about raising mental health awareness and reducing the stigma surrounding seeking help for mental health problems. She encourages a conceptualization of mental health that is more fluid and allows for occasional disruptions in emotional well-being to be embraced as a natural part of the human experience and not pathologized.
    In this episode, we cover:
    - how she became a pioneer in the nutritional psychology space
    - how inflammation, oxidative stress, brain plasticity, and your microbiota affect your mental health
    - how chronic GI disorders and mental illnesses are linked
    - why symptoms are invitations to explore more about yourself and your body
