Rethinking Retirement
I have just listened to the above podcast. The panel made some very good valid points on age discrimination and that it needs to be given equal merit with other categories. However I was very concerned on the perception that old people should be encouraged to downsize to increase properties for families, which is actually a very ageist perception that is being fostered by certain pressure groups and politicians. Many of have worked hard and saved all our lives and love our homes, gardens and the community that we are in. Most people I know who are 60, 70 & 80 something, are happy and are more than capable of looking after themselves and their homes and in many instances have spent most of their savings to make their homes comfortable for themselves and/or inheritance for their families. It should also be remembered that we need our own spaces and to feel safe which may not be the case if we are pressured to downsize to something that they may not be happy with. I am tired of receiving & seeing adverts for Releasing Equity, adverts for funerals, etc, which are only encouraging people to take on debt. At the end of the day, older people should not be made to feel guilty and pressured to downsize, when the real issue lies with government and housing polices.
