#87: Finding the perfect balance in your photography business with Sam Docker

Welcome to episode 87 of Shoot Edit Chat Repeat, the podcast for people photographers. Hosted by two leading UK portrait photographers, Vicki Knights & Eddie Judd.

This week we chat to UK wedding photographer, Sam Docker. Since 2012, Sam has shot 300+ weddings worldwide and also loves training other photographers and helping them to run a successful wedding photography business.

With all of the rescheduled weddings from 2020 going back in the diary, 2021 has been the busiest year ever for many wedding photographers. We've heard many photographers saying they are physically and mentally exhausted.

We chat to Sam all about finding that elusive perfect balance in our businesses and lives.

We talk about how to say no, how to charge more, and why it's important that photographers keep fit in order to keep up with the physical challenges of the job.

It's a brilliant chat and we think you're going to take so much from it.

Warning, there's a bit of salty language during the chat, so pop your headphones in if there are little ears around!

We've heard lots of you saying recently that you're feeling overwhelmed and stressed.

It's understandable - coming out of lockdown where we weren't shooting, socialising, mum-taxiing etc etc then being thrown right back into our busy lives is a shock to the system!

So we invited the wonderful US photographer LeAnna Azzolini onto the show to chat to us about this.

LeAnna has just experienced burn out herself, so we talk about her experience of this and how to recognise the signs early before you burn out.

We have a lovely chat with LeAnna all about her tips for dealing with overwhelm burnout, whether social media contributes to this and also about her love for self-portraiture.

I can really relate to this!

I love listening to Shoot Edit Chat Repeat whenever I’ve got a moment - I just listened to the interview with Karen Skidmore and I feel like I can relate to it so much that I had to tell you!
I reached burnout in my business in 2018 from trying to do way too much; I was working 7 days a week and had no social life! I was shooting weddings, whilst building up the portrait side of my business shooting boudoir and personal branding. There were also other things that contributed to my burnout but that's a whole other story! I made the tough decision to stop shooting weddings (which was my main bread
