    Another Maverick Perspective on Innovation

    Another Maverick Perspective on Innovation

Continuing with World Creativity and Innovation Week The Maverick Paradox continues to mark the occasion with a discussion on innovation from The Maverick Paradox's 6 Featured Columnists. The columnists are based in a number of countries and work asynchronous to each other.
Therefore to hear the views of all the columnists we have created two short panels. This is the second panel and features Judith Germain who hosts, and is joined by Ben Baker and Jo Farmer.
Key Takeaways Both Ben and Jo provided thoughtful perspectives on innovation from the lens of their expertise in communication and autism. Communication, authenticity, and understanding diverse perspectives are key for organisations to align teams and put values into action. In this conversation Ben explained that companies should understand their identity and purpose before innovating communication. Storytelling is key to inspire change by helping people understand why it benefits them and the company. However, stories must be simple, repeatable and valued by employees to be effective.
Jo explained autistic brains see possibilities others miss due to thinking differently. Problem prevention is prioritised over problem-solving. Innovation lies in autistic voices being heard plainly rather than masked. Understanding different perspectives unlocks potential.

    A Maverick Perspective on Innovation

    A Maverick Perspective on Innovation

It is World Creativity and Innovation Week and The Maverick Paradox has chosen to mark the occasion with a discussion on innovation from The Maverick Paradox's 6 Featured Columnists. The columnists are based in a number of countries and work asynchronous to each other.
Therefore to hear the views of all the columnists we have created two short panels. This is the first panel and features Judith Germain who takes on the dual role of hosting and being asked questions as a Featured Columnist. She is joined by David Chislett, Josuel Rogers and Astrid Davies.
Key Takeaways Creativity is the process underlying innovation. Anyone can innovate if they adopt a creative mindset. Clarity on the problem and desired outcome helps drive effective innovation. Maverick leadership principles of independent thinking and purpose-driven goals enable ethical innovation. Connecting diverse ideas sparks new innovations. Reframing the familiar catalyses creativity. Panellist Spotlights: David discussed how creativity underpins innovation, and how framing problems with "blue sky thinking" unlocks innovation vs just process. Josuel explained how hip hop culture and its improvisational, collaborative nature can spark business innovation through different thinking. Judith discussed how clarity on the problem and outcome boundaries enables purposeful innovation. Maverick leaders innovate ethically for the greater good. Astrid discussed innovating within ethics/sustainability parameters to benefit society, and using SDG goals as an ethical framework. In this conversation the panellists explained how their writing bears witness, identifies lateral thinking, and gives reflection to spark readers' tools for handling unpredictable change.

    The 3 leadership myths

    The 3 leadership myths

In this episode Judith Germain speaks to Jodi Hume about leadership myths and decision fatigue.
Key Takeaways Hustle culture and the idea that it's "lonely at the top" are damaging myths about leadership Emotional/energetic regulation is crucial for optimal executive functioning and decision making Having a support network you can process decisions with is key to avoiding decision fatigue Saying "yes" and figuring things out along the way can build confidence In this conversation they discuss how neurodivergence often aids entrepreneurship, with different thinking driving innovation. Understanding individual needs optimises one's decision-making.
They agree doubt ensures prudence but imposter syndrome labels normal fears. Success emerges from navigating uncertainty, not perfectionism.
After a 15 year career as COO of a rapidly growing architecture firm, Jodi Hume now provides on-call decision support and facilitated leadership conversations for startup founders and entrepreneurs across the globe. She is also lead singer of The Wafflers.

    Is leadership presence innate?

    Is leadership presence innate?

In this episode Judith Germain and Katherine Lazaruk discuss professional presence and leadership beyond stereotypical norms.
Key Takeaways Leadership presence is innate and can be cultivated, but does not guarantee taking on a leadership role. Knowing your true self and being congruent with internal and external expression builds presence. Diverse perspectives are needed at leadership tables for organisations to thrive. Non-white women face double bias and must navigate risks in self-expression. In this conversation Katherine argues leadership presence is more than superficial rules, exploring what's beyond the dominant white male paradigm. Judith counters some innate presence remains regardless of choices.
They discuss how current success measures harm humanity and the planet. Continuous growth is unnatural; balance and limits are needed. Leadership must evolve for whole human beings.
Katherine Lazaruk is a professional presence expert and maverick. She started her business in image consulting but hates shopping. Katherine knows what's it like to be an outlier in an industry and knows how it can be turned into an advantage.

Talent identification and its impact on culture

Talent identification and its impact on culture

In this episode Judith Germain speaks to Kristin Lytle about talent identification and its impact on organisational culture.
Key Takeaways Self-awareness and self-regulation are critical skills for leaders to have. Leaders who can recognise when they are discombobulated and take a moment to re-center themselves before interacting with others have a huge impact.
Succession planning is still valuable but needs to focus more on developing talent pools rather than detailed individual plans, due to the speed of change today.
Trust is built when employees feel they can predict what an organisation will do - keeping commitments to develop and grow employees builds trust.
Catch people doing things right and help them see their own talents, don't just focus on the gaps.
In this conversation Kristin explains that identifying talent is just the first step - leaders must support and invest in identified talent, even through mistakes, otherwise potential goes wasted. Judith agreed large companies often narrowly define roles instead of developing diverse potential.
They agree that an organisation's culture reflects the behaviours it rewards - if problematic actions are tolerated, that sets the standard. Predictability and trust come from following through on commitments.
Kristin Lytle is the CEO of Leaders Edge. She is on a mission to help companies and individuals unlock the full potential of their talent.

    Women and underdog leadership

    Women and underdog leadership

In this episode Judith Germain speaks to Jenny L Mitchell about leadership journeys and approaches.
Key Takeaways There are parallels between Judith's "maverick" leadership style and Jenny's "underdog" leadership style - both value authenticity, curiosity, and bringing out the best in others. Mindset is key - assume positive intent, focus on possibilities rather than obstacles. Critical thinking skills in younger generations may not transfer across all domains - need to educate holistically. Leadership is a constant process of negotiation and seeking to understand. Meetings should drive decisions, not just discussion. Women leaders often take on "glass cliff" assignments and overcome perception barriers on their journey. Visionary mindset helps. Important for marginalised voices (women, people of colour) to be heard and supported as leaders. In this conversation Judith and Jenny debate different leadership styles like mavericks and underdogs, with Jenny advocating for embracing challenges and Judith emphasising seeking first to understand others' perspectives.
Jenny outlines five pillars of top women leaders' experiences: embodied roles, embracing challenges, overcoming perceptions, accepting high-risk assignments, and visionary mindsets.

Forecasting with out liars

Love the show and love following Judith must say love the play on words out liars so much in this podcast I just don’t a way to begin. Probably the key take away from me was you can’t do proper forecasting if there’s blame in the process

The best podcast out there for the pathologically curious!

Jude is a top podcast host who brings out the best in her guests. I was just listening to the episode with Bruce King about the sales person’s struggle, I loved how he highlighted that most sales people don’t actually understand what a buyer wants now days. He pointed out how selling is really about exposing companies and individuals to problems they never knew they had and guiding them towards your product/ service as the solution to their problems. It was genuinely so insightful. - Erin Curran
