The Power of Radical Self Advocacy
Today on the podcast we are talking about the power of practicing radical self-advocacy. I call this radical because for many folks who have marginalized and intersectional identities, the practice of standing up for yourself can be a radical act within a society and culture that does not recognize the humanity and rights of all individuals. Practicing self-advocacy is a form of self-love and of self-care. For women and folks impacted by misogyny and sexism, there is a risk in practicing self-advocacy because we are socialized as girls and women to be likeable, to be pleasant, to be nice, to put and to put other folks’ comfort ahead of our own. This is a radical act when we are living within a society that has bias, prejudice, and discrimination built into the fabric of our culture. So the reality is one must be strategic in how you go about being a self-advocate, you need to understand the power dynamics at play within any situation, but what we are not going to do is allow worry about our likeability and perceived lack of humility to keep us from standing up for ourselves and our interests. Each time you stand up for yourself, make your interests known, communicate your non-negotiables, and are honest with yourself and others you are and living in alignment with your values. You practicing self-advocacy in your personal life is a power move.
