A pleasure

Really enjoyable to listen to these two. Campbells down to earth straight talking and Stewart’s insightful, refreshing demeanour. Fantastic balance. It works.

In contrast …

… to Rory’s thoughtful, consensual, and open-minded demeanour, I don’t think Campbell has the first idea how to ‘disagree agreeably.’ At best you’ll get something like ‘I think you’re wrong, but let’s leave it at that and move on’ or an attempt to have the last word before bouncing the discussion on to something completely different, cutting off an opportunity to reply. At worst you get the full-on Campbell ‘effing Tories’ meltdown as with the NI conversation, not a great look. Rory deserved a medal for maintaining his composure throughout that onslaught, definitely the grown up in the room. Reminds me, I much re-watch Portillo and Flint wiping the floor with Campbell on TW from a few years ago. The Blair episode was a disappointment. He rambled on about pragmatic solutions, which is great so far as it goes. But does he have any ideology at all? The fact we don’t talk about ‘Blairism’ probably means not. Maybe his real strength was being able to remain a blank canvas, allowing anyone to project whatever they wanted on to it.

Ultimately they are too similar

This podcast is a real disappointment. Part of the problem is they obviously like each other. Secondly, Campbell’s credibility is shot because of the dodgy dossier and his continuing admiration for Blair. Thirdly, their polite exchanges totally ignore what a horrific position the world is in - number one being climate catastrophe. Fourthly, they don’t touch on the real problem: that the world is run by a small super-wealthy elite who manipulate everything to their own ends and that democracy is an illusion. They are just chattering away about nothing that is going to change anything. Campbell claims to hate public schools but his discussion with Stewart about that was pathetically anodyne. Far more vitriol is required. These people are irrelevant. We need a revolution.
