Episode 3 - Niclas Larsson - The Power of Naivete

Niclas Larsson began his career as a child actor and now is one of the leading commercial directors in the world. The Swedish director linked with King She to talk about the gift of being naive early in a director's career, bringing a punk sensibility to commercial directing, and collaborating with clients to maximise artful output. Niclas shares many gems of insight from his robust career including how the foundation for it all is in the writing, how his early work as a child actor informs his directing today, and how to direct from a place of affirmation rather than critique.   Episode Mentions:    [https://newland.tv/]  Adam Berg [https://anorakfilm.com/directors/adam-berg/] The Carousel - Phillips [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JJyXryevxY] Erik Torrell [https://newland.tv/] Gustov Johansson [https://newland.tv/directors/gustav-johansson] Iconoclast [https://iconoclast.tv/us] Steven Spielberg [https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000229/] Romain Gavras [https://www.iconoclast.tv/us/romain-gavras] Mother Couch [https://abovetheline.com/2022/10/07/mother-couch-movie-taylor-russell-ewan-mcgregor-ellen-burstyn/] Ewan McGregor [https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000191/] Camp David [https://www.campdavidfilm.com/] Volvo - The Parents Commercial [https://vimeo.com/460189926] Whats App - One Ad [https://vimeo.com/659334960] Kasper Tuxen [https://luxartists.net/kasper-tuxen/] Linus Sandgren [https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0761874/] Rodrigo Prieto [https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0006509/] Evan Prosofsky [https://evanprosofsky.com/] Paul Thomas Anderson [https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000759/] Boogie Nights [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118749/] Magnolia [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0175880/] Taxi Driver [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075314/] .  This episode is sponsored by Somesuch, Supreme Music, Bonaparte Films, UN.STUDIOS, and Cartel.

Episode 1 - Bradford Young - Breaking Barriers

Bradford Young (Pariah, Selma, Solo) is an Oscar award nominated cinematographer and an extraordinary new presence in the space of commercial directing. He sat down with his long-time friends, directing duo King She, to discuss the necessity of creative community, the cosmological ingredients of great filmmaking, and the unexpected potential for creative freedom found in commercial advertising.   In this episode we get to hear about how Bradford's ethic of working was shaped by his mortician/Civil Rights-revolutionary Grandfather. He offers his interpretation of the spiritual and alchemical process of "getting the shot." We hear how limitations in his early career and issues of technological accessibility both informed his visual aesthetic and galvanized him to create Tribe7, his cinema lens company. Bradford also speaks on the power of strong visual language paired with artistic rigor. He shares his vision for genuine creative trust and freedom in his working relationships and offers advice on building one's own bridge to directing from other crew positions.   Mentions: Imar Hutchins [https://www.imarhutchins.com/] Akin McKenzie [https://www.myknifeandtimes.com/] Titus Kaphar [https://www.kapharstudio.com/] Leslie Hewitt [https://www.guggenheim.org/artwork/artist/leslie-hewitt] Harris Savides [https://www.moma.org/calendar/film/1347] James Grey [https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0336695/] Roger Deakins [https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005683/] Jason Moran [http://www.jasonmoran.com/] Khalil Joseph [https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/11/06/the-black-excellence-of-kahlil-joseph] Arthur Jafa [https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/14/t-magazine/arthur-jafa-in-bloom.html] Tribe7 [https://7isatribe.com/] Neil Fanthom [https://filmmakermagazine.com/107704-lens-flair/#.ZFKi-ezMI-Q] J Dilla [https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/01/arts/music/j-dilla-time-book.html] SR2 Film camera [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arriflex_16SR] Neéstor Almendros [https://mubi.com/cast/nestor-almendros] Pasolini [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pier_Paolo_Pasolini] Tarkovsky [https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2021/02/15/the-drenching-richness-of-andrei-tarkovsky] Vittorio Storaro [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vittorio_Storaro] The Conformist [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065571/] Belly [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belly_(film)] Malik Hassan Sayeed [https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0768434/] Reed Morano [https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1543747/] John Hillcoat [https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0384825/] Haskell Wexler [https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005549/] Shawn Peters [https://www.shawnpeters.com/] Aint Them Bodies Saints [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2388637/]   This episode is sponsored by Somesuch, Supreme Music, Bonaparte Films, UN.STUDIOS, and Cabin Edit.
