604: Pro-Level Time Management for Musicians

In this episode, Cheryl B. Engelhardt dives deep into one of her favorite topics: time management for musicians. She shares a game-changing strategy that challenges the traditional use of to-do lists and instead emphasizes the power of a calendar system. Cheryl explains why to-do lists can often become overwhelming and how shifting tasks into a structured calendar can create more time, reduce stress, and ultimately help you become more effective in your music career. Key Takeaways: Ditch the To-Do List: Cheryl highlights the limitations of to-do lists, which often become overwhelming and lead to a sense of constant pressure. Instead, she advocates for transferring tasks directly into a calendar, where they can be managed in time and space. Embrace the Calendar System: By scheduling tasks in a calendar, you can alleviate mental clutter, trust your future self to complete tasks, and create a reliable structure that supports your goals. Flexibility within Structure: Cheryl discusses the importance of being flexible with your calendar, allowing yourself to move tasks if needed, but with a rule: don’t move a task more than three times. This helps maintain integrity with your past self and keeps you accountable. Prioritize Your Own Goals: Cheryl encourages musicians, especially those who are prone to people-pleasing, to prioritize their own goals in their calendars. She discusses the common pitfall of only scheduling commitments for others and not leaving room for personal projects. Align with Your Champagne Win: Focus on doing at least one thing each week that will move your career forward. Cheryl emphasizes the importance of small, consistent actions that lead to progress over time. Overcoming Emotional Blocks: Cheryl provides tips for overcoming emotional resistance to completing tasks, such as fear or procrastination, by building a strong relationship with your calendar and honoring your commitments. Actionable Steps: Try It Out: For one week, ditch your to-do list and use a calendar system instead. Schedule every task and honor those commitments as they appear in your calendar. Create Boundaries: Ensure that your calendar reflects your priorities, not just the needs of others. Schedule time for your personal projects and goals. Set Weekly and Daily Goals: Each week, set one goal that will move your career forward. Break it down into daily actions that you can realistically achieve. Be Gentle with Yourself: Adjusting to a new system takes time. Be patient and give yourself grace as you transition to this new way of managing your time. Quote of the Episode: "The best calendar system is the one that you use. It’s about creating a system inside your calendar that lets you thrive, not just survive." 603: The Power of The Goal & The Data

In this episode, Cheryl B. Engelhardt dives into one of the most crucial yet often overlooked aspects of a musician's journey: goal setting. But, like, PRO-level goal setting! SMART Goals with a Twist: While SMART goals are common, Cheryl advocates for pushing beyond "reasonable" and embracing ambitious, clear-cut objectives that inspire action and accountability. The Importance of Sharing Goals: You're twice as likely to achieve your goals if you share them with others. 602: Ditch the Default, Discover Your Commitment

In this episode, Cheryl dives deep into the powerful concept of "Commitment vs. Default." If you’ve ever found yourself feeling stuck despite doing all the “right” things in your music career or life, this discussion is for you. Cheryl explores how our subconscious default behaviors, often formed in childhood, can hold us back from achieving our true potential. She walks listeners through identifying these default behaviors and replacing them with a commitment that aligns with their true values and goals. Key Takeaways: Commitment vs. Default: Understand the difference between your automatic, survival-mode behaviors (your default) and the empowered, intentional actions that align with your goals (your commitment). Identifying Your Default: Cheryl guides you through exercises to identify the “tantrum statement” that reveals your default behavior. Crafting Your Commitment: Learn how to create a commitment statement that reflects your true values and can serve as a compass for decision-making. Real-Life Application: Cheryl shares a personal story about how she applied this concept during a challenging situation, highlighting the importance of shifting from default to commitment in real time. Action Steps: Identify Your Default: Reflect on past situations that triggered frustration or anxiety and identify your knee-jerk response. Craft Your Commitment: Use the exercises in this episode to create a simple statement that encapsulates your core values and mission. 601: The Musician's Success Cycle (and why every musician needs it!)

In this first episode of season six of the Music Business Breakthrough podcast, Cheryl introduces a transformative framework known as the "Musician Success Cycle," designed to help musicians navigate the complexities of their careers with clarity and strategic focus. The cycle is a practical tool for understanding where musicians stand in their career development and what actions to prioritize at different times. The concept of the Musician Success Cycle arose from a personal experience shared by Cheryl when on tour in Switzerland in 2007. This led to the development of a cyclical model for managing a music career, acknowledging that a musician's journey is not linear but rather involves recurring phases. Phase 1: Learning and Determining This phase focuses on goal-setting and acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge. Musicians assess what they want to achieve in this cycle and identify any learning opportunities, such as courses or workshops, that can support their goals. Phase 2: Creation In this phase, musicians produce the essential assets needed for their careers, such as new music or fan engagement tools. This is a creative period where the emphasis is on generating the content or products that will be promoted in later phases. Phase 3: Admin (Preparing and Sharing) Often overlooked, this phase involves handling administrative tasks like branding, metadata organization, and system setups. These foundational activities are crucial for a smooth transition to the next phase. Phase 4: Pitching and Promotion Here, musicians actively promote their work to audiences, industry professionals, or licensing agents. Preparation is key; musicians should be ready for potential high-demand scenarios, such as an influx of new fans or interest from industry figures. Phase 5: Fulfillment (Monetizing and Maintaining) This phase involves executing the plans set out in previous phases, such as performing at gigs or managing revenue streams. It's about capitalizing on the groundwork laid earlier and maintaining momentum. One common challenge addressed in the podcast is managing multiple projects that may be in different phases of the cycle. Cheryl advises aligning personal energy and focus rather than juggling tasks across different projects to avoid burnout. Another challenge is differentiating ongoing life responsibilities from project-specific tasks. The key is to recognize that routine activities, such as financial management or teaching, provide a stable foundation but are separate from the specific goals set within the cycle.
