SEASON FINALE SPECIAL: HOLIDAY CHEER — LGBTQ+ Youth & Chosen Family!

Season one of Xchanges is coming to a joyful end with a special convo between the LGBTQ+ Youth Xchange for Change's change-making team. Grab some coco and tune in to learn how you can spread cheer to LGBTQ+ foster youth, young people experiencing incarceration, and youth enduring homelessness during the holiday season.

We're joined by storyteller and strategist Tymber Hudson, policy advocate Tristian Torres, and child-welfare safety assessor Terry Scraggins. Make sure to have cookies or chocolates with your coco as you listen because we go all in: we chatted about how we're celebrating the holidays a little different this year, reflected on the whirlwind of a year 2020 has been, and set intentions for the New Year to come. Happy Holidays!

Co-hosted by Shear Avory and Elliott Hinkle.

Ep. 2: XCHANGE XPERIENCE PREVIEW — LGBTQ+ Youth & Foster Care

Ep. 2: XCHANGE XPERIENCE PREVIEW — LGBTQ+ Youth & Foster Care

XCHANGE XPERIENCE PREVIEW of the LGBTQ+ Youth Xchange for Change's 2nd (virtual) Xchange Xperience: LGBTQ+ Youth in Foster Care — Visible and Demanding Change on 12/10! REGISTER NOW: xchangeforchange.org.

LGBTQ+ youth are overrepresented in foster care compared to their non-LGBTQ+ peers and experience higher rates of psychiatric hospitalizations, juvenile justice involvement, placement in group homes, and homelessness. These disparities hit LGBTQ+ youth of color particularly hard given that youth of color and youth from low-income families are driven into the system at disproportionately high rates due to systemic racism and other societal disparities.

Youth in care not only face challenges to their safety and wellbeing but also endure ongoing threats to their legal rights. In our second episode, we chatted with Currey Cook about the national legal landscape, learned about the importance of participatory research and data representing LGBTQ+ youth, and talked about support for youth in out-of-home care.

Co-hosted by Shear Avory and Elliott Hinkle.

Ep. 1: ENCORE PRESENTATION — LGBTQ+ Black & Brown Youth, Policing, and the Justice System

Ep. 1: ENCORE PRESENTATION — LGBTQ+ Black & Brown Youth, Policing, and the Justice System

ENCORE PRESENTATION of the LGBTQ+ Youth Xchange for Change's 1st (virtual) Xchange Xperience: LGBTQ+ Black & Brown Youth, Policing, and the Justice System.

Black and Brown LGBTQ+ youth disproportionately endure violence and over-policing, and, simultaneously, experience additional police exposure due to unique pipelines into justice systems.

In July, we chatted with Maria about groundbreaking data, heard from orgs. led by youth of color who are pushing back against criminalization in schools and in the community, and learned from advocates, like Dominique, working tirelessly to end over-incarceration and mistreatment in "in-justice" systems.

Co-hosted by Shear Avory and Elliott Hinkle.

Our first guests are Maria Elena Torre and Dominique Morgan.

Maria (she/her) is the Founding Director of the Public Science Project and faculty member in Critical Psychology and Urban Education at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

Dominique (she/her) is an award-winning artist, activist, speaker, and the National Director of Black and Pink.
