Exercising wisdom: Should you really tell your elders?

Is it really important to tell your elders in the church that you are dating or in pursuit of someone? Is it important that your elder understands or is from the same cultural background?  How much do you share with your elder about your relationship? Who else do you talk to besides your elders about your relationship?
