325 – When Love Comes to Town

The reign of Aragorn Elessar begins, as the reign of Sara ends - quite possibly with her sailing off on a ship filled with cats. Join The Man of the West and the Shield-maiden of Rohan as Gandalf and the new king go mountain-climbing in our last episode on The Steward and the King. Frodo tries to be patient, Aragorn looks for a sign, and Arwen arrives with an entourage. We reconcile questionable timelines, and do the math to figure out how tall Mindolluin might be. Shawn joins Alan for a Philology Faire on ye utúvienyes — which apparently means, “Did you know I broke my toe when I kicked that helmet?” Also, Sara considers making apple crumble… from the fruit of the White Tree.

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for: The Return of… Ioreth. Also, we observe the difference between the Rod of the Stewards and Rod Stewart.

    323 – Tolkien Reading Day 2024

Put your own priorities aside and get ready to do the hard thing as you join us for the PPP’s ninth annual celebration of Tolkien Reading Day, observed every March 25 in honor of the destruction of the Ring and the fall of Barad-dûr. This year’s theme, as chosen by the Tolkien Society, is Service and Sacrifice — and wow, there are lots of great passages to choose from! The Man of the West and The Shield-maiden of Rohan join forces to highlight this powerful theme seen throughout Tolkien’s writing: from Éowyn and her frustration with ‘duty’, to the obvious Húrin moment; from Galadriel’s diminished joy, to a wet bicycle ride. Plus, Amandil’s private island is now head canon.

Éowyn is afraid that Darkness Unescapable is coming; Sara is afraid that Dad-Jokes Unescapable are coming. Also, it’s going to be a bright, bright, sunshiny day.

Grateful

Dear Gentlemen! It was kind of an odd chance, if chance you call it, me stumbling upon your podcast, however it couldn’t have come at a better time. Ironically, i was myself in an actual Hope or Despair state, sliding towards the brink, when strangely at one lonely lunch break at work, your show just popped up on my recommended on spotify, though i wasn’t much of a podcast consumer. Gave it a try and it was like a sudden Houses of Healing to my Fëa. It was during that time, that my elder brother, with whom i lived in Budapest, let’s just say received the Gift of Men, and i got my first bite of the Sorrow of Men. It was he, who introduced me to the work of Tolkien, after many fruitless attempts of convincing, see i was disinclined to acquiasce to his “request”, stating“The Lord of the Rings is this dull rambling of a stuck-in-the-past type of 20th century loner.” When i finally gave in and started reading Fellowship, my opinion began to change rapidly, and so had my bookshelf, but now before i digress even further (you taught me well sirs), i just want to thank you guys for all your efforts and invaluable experiences you give, and have given, and will have had given. (Not continuing, getting perplexed) You made reading an enjoyable activity again and gave back my laugh, not to mention the mornings when i listen to you on my way to work always evolve into a wonderful day. So what i’m trying to say is, i’m really grateful for this community and the shows and everything else, without these, i don’t know where i’d be, but let’s conclude with this thought: Because of this show, i have Hope, without it, likely i’d be on the brink of the deep Chasm of Despair. Greatest gratitude, Daniel from Hungary

BenGaurwaith ,

Huge thanks!

Ever since I stumbled upon this podcast, my way to work in the morning is a highlight of my day. I am a huge fan of the professor's oeuvre. I have started to listen to the series on the Silmarillion and can not stop. You do an amazing job and it is so much fun to listen to you. I have never been so happy for something in the media about Tolkiens work ever since Peter Jackson's movies turned out to be as great as they are. I really appreciate your approach and sense of humor as well. Keep up the good work, gentlemen! Thank you!

Bence from Hungary.
