EP136- What To Sow In The August Vegetable Garden

EP136- What To Sow In The August Vegetable Garden

In this weeks episode of Master My Garden podcast John looks at what to sow in the August vegetable garden.

August is generally is a month great harvests in our vegetable gardens. When it comes to what we can sow the number of seeds that we can actually sow is reducing dramatically.
    So what can we sow?
We can still sow lots of salad leaves lettuce, spinach, winter purslane, mizuna and others. We can also sow scallions, chard, Kale, radish, Milan purple top turnips (or other small varieties.  Along with some cabbage for spring heads so there are still lots to sow to extend our harvests late into the winter.

If you have bare ground be sure to cover it with green manures and health your soil health good for the spring.

Also you can start lining up your perennial seed for sowing from September onwards. I will cover this in an episode in the coming weeks.

EP135- Rory Newell Chats Plant Propagation, Forest Moon Plants and Much More!!

EP135- Rory Newell Chats Plant Propagation, Forest Moon Plants and Much More!!

In this weeks episode John chats with Rory Newell Forest Moon Plants.
Rory is an expert plant propagator, nurseryman and plants person. We chat about the different plants Rory propagates on his nursery and some of the techniques he uses to get more plants from less material. He also talks about some plant collections and stocks that he is planning to build up on his nursery over the coming months.

Finally we chat about his exciting plans to run an online plant propagation course later this year.

Here is a little bit about Forest Moon plants taken directly from their website.
Forest moon plants is a new family run plant nursery based on the edge of Galway city. The nursery is run by horticulturist/nurseryman Rory Newell who has been working away in the background for several years, slowly but surely building up on stock in anticipation of opening to the public (by arrangement) for the coming growing season of 2022.
Rory’s journey through horticulture has seen him visit and work in many of the great gardens forming important relationships which have helped steer his career in a very plant orientated way.” My primary interest always is firmly with the plants and learning about them” It was this passion for plants that led him to becoming a grower. “I just figured it was the best way to learn about plants” This obsession for plants has allowed him to travel in search of plants to places like Vietnam as part of a plant hunting team involved in conservation work.

    EP134- Gardening Thoughts From Tuscany

    EP134- Gardening Thoughts From Tuscany

In this weeks episode of the podcast John chats about his gardening thoughts from Tuscany after a recent family holiday there.

How good it is to be back able to travel on family holidays again and we went to Tuscany to a camp site for 13 days. What a beautiful place it is and we all had a great time.

The gardens, plant selection and they way they grew and sold vegetables was really interesting to me and I think we can learn a lot from their systems. Although they have a much different climate for many months of the year overall they have as  beautiful gardens as we do with a lot less fuss and maintenance maybe that is something we can learn from them.
Many country houses are very self sufficient in terms of veg and fruit and this also is something we should strive for given that our climate is so favourable for growing our own food.

These are just some thoughts that ran through my head as I chilled out for two weeks in a very beautiful part of the world.

EP131- What To Sow In July & Other Gardening Jobs

EP131- What To Sow In July & Other Gardening Jobs

In this weeks episode of Master My Garden podcast John looks at what to sow in July and other gardening jobs.

July is a month when all our vegetable beds are heaving with produce and space for new crops can be at a premium. It is also holiday time and a combination of holidays and full beds mean that people generally stop sowing their seed at this time of the year. However if you can keep sowing at this time you will have plants to go in after you harvest your onions, potatoes and other crops. This will ensure you have supply right through to the autumn and winter.

So what can we sow? We can still sow lettuce, scallions, chard, radish and many other successional crops. Also we can make the last sowing of beetroot and carrots outside.

Other gardening tasks we can do in July include taking softwood cuttings, staking perennials, and much more.

Also remember in July to enjoy your garden after all if you can't enjoy it why would you be gardening anyway.

Learning how to gardening in Ireland

As a Spanish living in Ireland, and only gardening since 2017, I was not sure how or what to do.
I learned something basics from my own, and I was determined not to be a Plant Killer anymore.
Thanks to “Master my Garden” podcast, I had the opportunity to continue learning from the well known experts not only from Ireland, which helps me a lot, if not internationally as John is always trying to count with the best in each field. The episode about soil was amazing!
I am very grateful to John for helping me in my gardening pathway from Plant Killer to a Gardener. Thank You!

Chantal Fortune ,

Irish, local and great!

I started listening to the new episodes and really enjoyed them. I’ve now gone back to the first episodes that John Jones put up… I think they are great because they’re Irish and all the tips and advice are exactly what climate and location I am gardening in. He is interviewing local people and that too is so helpful. I listen to podcasts as I’m gardening and it’s great to have an Irish one! Thank you
