EP. 7: Intersection between Martial Arts and Yoga with Gary Grisham

Gary Grisham is a friend, a teacher, and a brother.  Gary is a practitioner of many different forms of Martial Arts and Movement including Tong Soo Do, Budokon, Yoga, Locomotion, Jiu Jitsu among many more disciplines. Gary is currently traveling and teaching students the skills and techniques he has learned on his movement journey. Gary is a lover of fun and brings an opportunity for play wherever he goes. During the episode he characterizes himself as a "professional kid" which is a label I would be glad to have. In this episode Gary and I discuss the intersection between Martial Arts and Yoga, and how these practices can be integrated into each other, and into our lives as a whole. I hope you enjoy this episode with my dear brother Gary.  Show Notes 4:50: Discussing the origins of Tang Su Do founded by master Hwang Kee 9:10: Details on the historical origins of Tang Su Do martial arts style 11:00: Distinguishing Tae Kwon Do and Tong Su Do styles 13:15: Evaluating the similarities and differences between Yoga and Martial Arts 19:20: Gary discusses how he began practicing Budokon and many other parts of his life that stemmed from his Budokon training. 26:25: Defining Tabatta style workouts 28:20: Defining Katas and understanding the characteristics of different katas 30:35: Gary shares a humble story of how he finished his Budokon Class 33:30: Discussing the importance of rites of passage and ceremony and where they do and do not exist in western society 35:50: Gary shares the story of how he met his wife during his Budokon training 39:00: Harnoor introduces the idea of “movement dictionaries” and how different disciplines are transmitting the same knowledge through different names.
