"1812 and 2021: Foreign and Domestic"

"1812 and 2021: Foreign and Domestic"

January 6, 2021: insurgents attempt a coup and lay siege to the U.S. Capitol Building. We discuss this second attack in United States history on the Capitol, where it's not the British doing the assaulting, but U.S. citizens. A few things:

115 House Republicans and 14 Senate Republicans (though the latter number dropped precipitously post-coup attempt) who opposed the electoral count certifying Joseph Biden as President are culpable as instigators for insurrection. They need to be held accountable. Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) has introduced legislation seeking the expulsion of 115 House Republicans based on oath violations.
Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff win their Georgia special elections to bring the Senate under Democrat control. Historic election, especially for Reverend Warnock as the first Black Senator from Georgia.
Joy Reid reads the law enforcement response to the Capitol siege for filth. Watch here.
Please read On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder. Please educate yourself. If you need a refresher course on democracy, read A User's Guide to Democracy: How America Works by Nick Capodice & Hannah McCarthy. There's even pictures!

Look, it's a fraught, frightening time. Be safe, be vigilant, wear a mask, wash your hands, and remember this day. Remember that Rome burned from within, that Camelot fell from within, and that when we talk of ourselves as the city upon the hill, we must recall the eyes upon us, and the world in which we live in.

    "Diligent Democracy"

    "Diligent Democracy"

Whooooooooooah, 2020 madness continues. President-Elect Biden and VP-Elect Harris FTW! One would think sanity restored, but this is Pandemica, so norms like our DEMOCRACY appear to be up for disruption The family unpacks the historic 2020 election and battles for the soul of the Democratic Party in this suped-up mega episode.

    Wormholes:

No in-episode Timothy Snyder plug (∞ recommend: On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century), but Snyder has a piece in the Boston Globe warning us of the protozoan virus (autocracy) America risks exposure to if it doesn't wear its mask (democracy).
"Evil is diligent." - Whisper. This Korean drama is typical of the non-romcom dramas that offer viewers that slice-of-life morality seesaw between 'meh' and 'detestable'. More suspect people showing the pain of Doing The Right Thing and less West Wing/Veep morality plays/satires, US television, thanks.
    These Three Women.
Why the GSA administrator should not be a political appointment.
Can you imagine a Post article detailing Martha McSally crying about disunity to Mitch McConnell during a GOP phone call? Can't? Then get it together, Dems.

Until next time, wear your masks!

    "Don't Be Afraid of Covid-19...?"

    "Don't Be Afraid of Covid-19...?"

Unlike in The Last Kingdom, where the sickness somehow skipped royalty, Covid-19 has infected the President. We discuss this rapidly developing situation and the hypocrisy of it all.
