How Rob Dyrdek Connects Passion with Profitability

How Rob Dyrdek Connects Passion with Profitability

Whether you know him from his skateboarding days, one of his MTV hit shows, his constant advocacy for people taking care of their health, or his studio Dyrdek Machine, chances are you know who Rob Dyrdek is. And if not? It’s time to change that.

I’ve been friends with Rob for a while now, and our first formal interview was a couple years back. The way he was able to break down how he revolutionized product integration, created a TV empire on his own terms, and pushes himself to be better every single day is something that I still think about today!

In this episode, Rob opens up about the hard lessons he’s had to learn the hard way when it comes to thoughtful planning, hiring the right people, and realizing you can’t just throw money at problems. I could relate to so many experiences he shared! He talks about the mistakes made assuming his personal brand could sell any product and scale any idea without the diligent homework and structure.

Rob also shares his genius for tapping into other platforms, whether it’s a TV network or other company's distribution. He is able to recognize unused assets and negotiate deals to utilize them by offering upside through royalties and equity. But he stresses you have to plan properly and know what success looks like or you end up overextended!

I love how Rob has relentless personal energy and passion that infectiously drives his organization, but he admits he can take on too much. He wants to create systems and processes to nurture ideas simultaneously and scale them. One huge insight he shares is around the importance of building your personal brand in alignment with your business branding in an authentic way - something I could not agree more with!

Motivation Moment - When Life Gives You Lemons, Start a Fortune 500 Company

Motivation Moment - When Life Gives You Lemons, Start a Fortune 500 Company

It's Monday, so that means it's time for another #MotivationMoment!

I recently came across a fascinating study by the Kauffman Foundation, and what I found was both surprising and inspiring. It turns out that a significant number of today's Fortune 500 companies share an unexpected commonality – their origins. These companies, now towering giants in the corporate world, started their journey during times that were anything but stable. Imagine launching a business when the economy seems as fragile as a crumbled Nature Valley bar – daunting, right?

These innovators didn't just see chaos; they saw a canvas ripe with opportunity. This fact alone reshapes our understanding of success and its relationship with uncertainty. But just how many of these companies emerged during such times? The percentage is as shocking as it is inspiring.

These corporate pioneers didn't just survive; they thrived, crafting new paths amidst financial storms. They serve as a powerful reminder: when the market bears loom, and stocks tumble, stagnation isn't the only option. This period of instability could be the hidden gem, the perfect time to sow the seeds of your innovative ideas.

So, as I navigate through my daily 9 to 5, I can't help but wonder: could the next economic downturn be the catalyst for my success story? It's a question worth pondering. When the bears prowl Wall Street next, it could be your cue not to hide but to step up and carve your path to greatness. Remember, the most unexpected times could be the start of something extraordinary!

How Award-Winning Eriq La Salle Continues to Dominate Across Industries

How Award-Winning Eriq La Salle Continues to Dominate Across Industries

If you were winning awards and clearly dominating your industry, would you let yourself tap out or would you instead take the leap to test out your skills in a new industry? The most recent episode of That Moment with Daymond John featured the incredible Eriq La Salle, who dove headfirst into the latter.

It takes a confident but strategic person to try your hand in a whole new skillset, but Eriq knew he had what it took to pivot from a successful acting and directing career to an author status (without skipping a beat when it comes to continuing to create and star in new film/TV!). He joined me on That Moment to share the moments that led to him releasing the latest book in his fiction series and what he has in the works on and behind the camera.

Eriq shared some powerful insights that listeners will definitely learn from, like:

Where the drive to become an author actually came from

What to do when you’ve done literally everything right…but still can’t succeed

Navigating industries that are known for being cutthroat and forming genuine relationships

Finding inspiration as you try to figure out what’s next for yourself

Why you need to prepare before the opportunity is even there

Making room for everyone in your space and the importance of representation

    And more!

Motivation Moment - How to Become a Billionaire Baller

Motivation Moment - How to Become a Billionaire Baller

It's Monday so its time for a #MotivationMoment!

You'll never believe the crazy story of how one fateful decision took Michael Jordan from basketball phenom to a global brand worth over a billion dollars! This tale involves a major crossover into the world of sneakers, a risky partnership with an unlikely upstart company, and Jordan's mother playing a pivotal role behind the scenes.

When MJ was approached by this small athletic brand in 1984, he wasn't interested at first. However, his mom convinced him to take the meeting that would change the course of his career. What transpired in that conversation altered the future of sports marketing forever!

While Jordan was ready to go with the established market leader, his mother's intuition led him down a different path. The gamble that an unknown player in the shoe game took on MJ paid off big time for both parties. I'm talking BILLIONS made from the iconic shoe collaboration that kicked off in 1984!

This story shows why you should always be open to unexpected opportunities, even if it means taking a leap of faith. Had Jordan stuck with the safe choice, he may never have become the business mogul he is today.

Tune in to find out how one meeting launched the richest sponsorship deal in sports history! I won't spoil the surprise ending or spill all the business lessons I learned from MJ's journey. You'll have to listen to the full episode if you want the inside scoop on how Jordan scored big financially with some savvy moves guided by his momager. This is an inspirational tale you won't want to miss!
