The Underbelly of Sex Addiction. This Is Recovery With Rob Watt and Dr. Kirsty Loudon

The Underbelly of Sex Addiction. This Is Recovery With Rob Watt and Dr. Kirsty Loudon

This is my first episode inspired by a few listeners who have been in touch with me to share how sex addiction has disrupted, or is disrupting their lives.  I went looking for answers only to find two world-class experts in the area of Sex Addiction: Dr. Kirsty Loudon and Rob Watt.
Dr. Kirsty, Rob and myself have connected a few times over a couple of months to organise the content for this episode. We have distilled the information into two key questions: "How do I know I have a Sex Addiction vs. A Healthy Sex Life?" and "What is in the underbelly of Sex Addiction?" - So we cover things like: what is going on?,  (which includes discussion of early attachment and sexual development), what would be helpful to understand about the nature of this?, and how can we help ourselves navigate our way back into healthy states?
Special thanks to Dr. Kirsty and Rob for the effort that went into this interview, and to Lucy, at Innisfree Therapy and her colleagues, who have made enormous contributions to the direction and structure of this episode.

S2: E22 - I Think I Have C-PTSD, Now What? This Is Recovery With Roseanne Reilly

S2: E22 - I Think I Have C-PTSD, Now What? This Is Recovery With Roseanne Reilly

Her name is Roseanne Reilly, an Irish woman in NYC, who is a masterful facilitator of individuals with C-PTSD. Her career path moved her through being a nurse, a health & safety educator and trainer, an advanced practitioner of Craniosacral Therapy, and today, a Trauma Informed Practitioner with dozens of qualifications and certifications to her name after more than 10 years study in the areas of stress and its affects on the brain-body. Roseanne herself has risen from the provebial ashes that allows her to show up in a way that facilitates the Highly Successful, Secretly in Despair folk who are exhausted!
In this episode, Roseanne shares a distinction between healthy stress, chronic stress, trauma stress, extended trauma stress and why the brain-body is the first stop on the way out of all of this.
We examine  the 0-5 yrs old time frame answering the how and why those first 5 years significantly influence who we become as adults. Roseanne shares how the Nervous System is functioning under duress, and what steps we can take now to support our brain-body to recover. I ask Roseanne to get us to the starting line - "We have C-PTSD, now what?"
And... where is the starting line, what does it look like, what do we do there and how long before we get to move on? Roseanne shares valuable information on how you can do this on your own, and a few reasons as to why you can't before I ask Roseanne to tell me more about her 6-week R.I.S.E. program supported by 1-to-1 sessions with her, before we give her the floor for some final thoughts.
I learned so much in this episode. I am excited to be able to share this one with you.

The Ugly Sides To Recovery And The Daily Practice That Brings In the Beauty

The Ugly Sides To Recovery And The Daily Practice That Brings In the Beauty

This episode is a more candid look at the uglier sides of recovery as I reflect on the last 10 days or so where I have been all sorts of dysregulated, and then irritated that I am still 'falling down', and the honest look I had to take at what I am 'really' doing about my recovery.  As it goes, what I am doing pales in comparison to what I let myself BELIEVE I am doing.
I share what I am doing now, in case it should inspire your own version.  I also talk briefly about the 3 distinctions I have been pondering about the role of the body, in tandem with the 8 stages to C-PTSD recovery (a work in progress, for sure) and some cool tools I am using as part of those insights.
Consider this simply another episode for us both, to continue the learning.

Unpacking: 1. Being In Your Body and 2. Engaging Body Work, To Expedite Healing

Unpacking: 1. Being In Your Body and 2. Engaging Body Work, To Expedite Healing

I share the clarity I have gained, some distinctions I've made, and some suggestions on how and where to start. Starting is what matters most here. This is the episode where I unpack two areas that matter a lot when it comes to: healing, recovery and shifting out of the chaos of emotional overwhelm, emotional numbing, and emotional exhaustion, and into a space that feels really good to be in, even when stressful spaces, places and faces pop up.

That means understanding; the body's role in your healing, how the body can expedite recovery, how the body will drive us to React or Respond during times of stress, and appreciating the distinction between supporting your body, being in your body and working with body (E.g. Body Work).

Some of the key terms I use in this episode include:
    #NervousSystem, #SelfRegulation, #MindBodyCommunication, #ImplicitMemory, #Unconscious, #RepressedEmotion, #EmotionRecovery, #EmotionRelease, #Reparenting, #Reframing.

I also introduce an imaginary visual aid (a spectrum) to explain Body Work for 3 distinct activities (recover, release, reparent) that I have found helpful in order to better understand this specific area. Those 3 areas plotted along my imaginary spectrum include: Ancient Practices, Clinical Practices, Modern Practices. You are invited to simply enter the spot on the spectrum that feels most interesting for you because there is no one-way-to-do-this.

S2:E19 - This Self Regulation Practice Has Made All The Difference

S2:E19 - This Self Regulation Practice Has Made All The Difference

An episode that looks at one of the most important tools that I've used to transform my life from chaos and trainwrecks, to calm and having all sorts of fun thriving.
2 years ago I didn't quite get the value of this practice; I read a few books, watched a few videos and gave it a go.  Today? I realise if I had it to do all over again - this journey out of the proverbial void - I would do it quite differently.
In this episode I share what, why, where, how of Self Regulation and compare and contrast life  before and after and why it matters so much to me now.
