Bubble Skirts and Fishnet Arm Slings in Little Shop of Horrors (1986)

Feed me, Seymour! We’re diving into Little Shop of Horrors, the 1986 musical comedy about a sentient plant that’s hungry for human blood. This pick comes courtesy of Blaire, a self-proclaimed "musical hater" with one major exception: this cult classic. Marit Allen (Eyes Wide Shut, Brokeback Mountain, The Witches) was the costume designer behind these fun '80s-does-50s/60s' looks, and we quickly see similarities between some costumes in this and another movie she designed, Mermaids. From Audrey’s leopard print wiggle dress to Seymour’s dork-chic plaids, we have a grand old time dissecting these campy costumes. Other topics include childhood crushes on Rick Moranis, Steve Guttenberg, and Bill Murray; Megan Thee Stallion's looks in the "Bigger In Texas" music video; Georgina Trevino's my cunty purse; whether or not we're watching Wicked, "Adele Dazeem," and more unhinged tomfoolery from your favorite costume design-loving duo.  HOMEWORK: Leave a message telling us about the one outfit in a movie that you think about a lot! Flight Attendant Fashion and “Rich Face” in View From the Top (2003) With Macy Eleni

TikTok thrifting queen and sustainable style icon Macy Eleni joins the pod to talk about one of her favorite films — 2003’s View from the Top, a lesser-known, underrated film from the early aughts, rom-com era. Gwyneth Paltrow is Donna, a small-town girl with big hair and an even bigger ambition to be a Chanel lipstick-wearing, first-class international flight attendant! Costume designer Mary Zophres (La La Land, Babylon, Ghost World) put Paltrow, Christina Applegate, Kelly Preston, and Candice Bergen in Moschino, D&G, Betsey Johnson, Versace, Escada, and DVF from the era, and every look is DIVINE! And the flight attendant uniforms range from sassy to sophisticated. This is a true, overlooked fashion movie that we are unearthing TODAY! We also discuss our love for Brittany Murphy, Gwyneth's "rich face," the power of pawn shop finds, and, of course, Macy's new book, Second Chances! Plus, so much more.  Mentions and links: https://floodmagazine.com/128953/rearview-mirror-view-from-the-top/ Virginia Fontaine Get Macy's new book: Second Chances: The Ultimate Guide to Thrifting, Sustainable Style, and Expressing Your Most Authentic Self. 3. Hot Topic Goth Corsets and Cozy Fall Turtlenecks in Urban Legend (1998)

    1 NOV

Hot Topic Goth Corsets and Cozy Fall Turtlenecks in Urban Legend (1998)

We bid farewell to October by having Halloween Queens’ Natalie Burris back on the pod to dissect the late ‘90s fashions of Urban Legend! This post-Scream slasher is stacked with the hottest stars of the era, with the killer terrorizing college kids by referencing Urban Legends. A super fun concept with great costume design by Mary Claire Hannan (The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Jackie Brown, Red Eye, Four Rooms!). We love the autumn-esque, Gilmore Girls vibe of Alicia Witti's final girl's turtlenecks, Danielle Harris as the goth roommate in all of her Hot Topic deliciousness, and Tara Reid's sexy looks as the campus radio host/sex advice columnist. Questions we have: was Sasha's (Tara Reid) Halloween costume somehow based on Tiffany from Bride of Chucky (it may have been filming at the same time?!), and was Niecy Nash's character in Scream Queens inspired by Loretta Devine in this film? Other discussions include Marie's JNCOs, The Substance (and Natalie’s incredible Halloween costume as The Star), the lack of goth side characters in movies today, and we long wistfully for the celebrity rumors and urban legends of yore….(gerbil, stomach-pumping, etc.).  Follow Natalie and Halloween Queens on IG!  https://www.instagram.com/shatalie/ https://www.instagram.com/halloweenqueens/ For visuals of the costumes, follow us on: Instagram at @makeovermontagepodcast TikTok at @makeovermontagepodcast YouTube at @makeovermontage Follow Marie on Instagram and Blaire on Instagram Don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review us on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!  To request a movie for us to cover, DM us on Instagram or hit us up at makeovermontagepod[at]gmail.com. 1980s Mall Catalogue Perfection in Lisa Frankenstein (2024)

If you can’t meet your perfect boyfriend...make him! This week, we’re teasing our hair, putting on our leg warmers, and invoking 1980s fashion with Lisa Frankenstein, which marks Diablo Cody’s return to horror comedy and Zelda Williams’s directorial debut! Miss Lisa (Kathryn Newton) is an angsty teen who has a meet-cute with a reanimated corpse (Cole Sprouse) and goes on a murdering spree to put his dismembered body back together. Brilliantly costumed by Meagan McLaughlin (Happy Death Day, Mike, 10 Cloverfield Lane), Lisa’s sartorial evolution goes from quiet, angsty teen to IDGAF goth girlie (greatly inspired by Winona Ryder in Heathers). We’re adding alllll the Blossom hats, slutty pirate dresses, Cathy comic tees, and rainbow rosaries to our carts! Plus: This episode’s rants and raves feature an ASSORTMENT of topics that include Agatha All Along, Tell Me Lies, Fight Night, Moo Deng, Succession, Jelly Roll, Cuckoo, The SUBSTANCE!!! And how this season of Only Murders has been tempting Marie to wear NEUTRAL COLORS?!  Mentions: Marie’s interview with Megan on Fashionista: https://fashionista.com/2024/02/lisa-frankenstein-costumes-outfits Megan on InStyle’s Behind the Seams: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYTfJmMPvj0 Friend of the pod Abbey Bender’s Lisa Frankenstein article on Fangoria: https://www.fangoria.com/lisa-frankenstein-costumes/ For visuals of the costumes, follow us on: Instagram at @makeovermontagepodcast TikTok at @makeovermontagepodcast Follow Marie on Instagram and Blaire on Instagram Don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review us on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!  To request a movie for us to cover, DM us on Instagram or hit us up at makeovermontagepod[at]gmail.com.
