Wide open spaces.
If the Chicks have taught us anything through their musical musings it's that such spaces are pretty neat. Or maybe terrible? Honestly I couldn't tell you any other lyrics to that particular song.
But in any case, where else on this planet can you find more spaces of a wide open nature than the open ocean? I struggle to think of any. I personally find the open ocean utterly terrifying, but maybe sailor's dig it? At least most of it...
