Saving Face

Do Ladies Do That?ポッドキャスト

In this week’s episode of DLDT podcast, we review Alice Wu’s first feature film is ‘Saving Face’. Wil, played by Michelle Krusiec, is a lesbian who is terrified about telling her widowed mother Hwei-lan, played by Joan Chen, or her extremely traditional grandparents, who all live in the town of Fleming, about her sexuality. However, she is surprised to find out that she's not the only one in her family holding back secrets when she discovers that her 48-year-old mother is pregnant out of wedlock. Unwilling to reveal who the father is, Hwei-lan is kicked out of her parents' home and shunned as a result so therefore, she moves in with Wil, which then puts a strain on Wil's budding relationship with openly gay Vivian, portrayed by Lynn Chen. We discuss different aspects of the film such as how it can be difficult to date when one half is out and the other is still in the closet, the issues we have with coming out and our fondness for the soft relationship between the two characters.
