    The son comes home

    There is only one recorded event of Jesus between his infancy and his public ministry at 30 years old. But why is this event recorded? Is it just about a lost child being found by his parents? Or is there more going on than it seems on the surface? In this incident we see the extraordinary way the Lord brings about his salvation through his incarnate Son, and adds to our certainty of all he accomplished.

    The search is on for Jesus, but what do we get if we truly find him? Jesus is the prophet, who speaks the Lord’s wisdom, and Jesus is the Son of God, who gives access to the presence of God.

    Sometimes Christians get so familiar with the gospel that we start to treat it lightly. In Galatians 4, God gives us a shocking illustration from the story of Sarah and Hagar. It's designed to wake us up and show us the seriousness of what he's been saying. It is a rousing wake up call into a glorious awareness of just how good it is to be a Christian.

    Salvation comes to the world

    Like watchmen announcing that a beacon has been lit, so Simeon and Anna alert us to the arrival of God's salvation. Describing Jesus as 'a light for revelation to the nations', Simeon draws on a rich Old Testament theme of God's plan to save the world. Whoever we are, we would do well to pay close attention to his words.

    Are ready to die? There is much for us to learn from Simeon and Anna. With the coming of Jesus, God has kept his promises of salvation and life, for all the world.

    There are just two different ways of approaching God in this world. One brings blessing, good and assured membership of God’s family. The other leads to slavery. Christians need to beware that they do not confuse the two. What is at stake if we do? Everything!
