    Kyle Garland, US Decathlete, Heading to Olympic Trials

    Kyle Garland, US Decathlete, Heading to Olympic Trials

    Rick is joined by an incredible athlete this week, US Decathlete, Kyle Garland.

    Garland is a University of Georgia product, who grew up and competed in Philadelphia.

    Showing promise as a junior athlete, Garland won gold at the 2018 USATF U20 Championships in the decathlon scoring 7562 points. He then went on to finish 7th at the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships.

    Now a pro, Garland was selected to compete at the 2022 World Athletics Championships held in Eugene, Oregon. Garland placed in the top 10 after the shot put, long jump and 100 meters events before ultimately finishing eleventh on his senior major championship debut, which was won by world-record holder Kevin Mayer of France.[4] He was selected for the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August 2023.

    The US has a long tradition of winning decathlons, and Garland wants to be a part of that.

    Charlene Lipsey, American Middle Distance Runner, Preparing for Olympic Trials

    Great to be joined by American middle distance runner, Charlene Lipsey to start a series of segments leading up to the US Olympic Track and Field Trials and Olympics.

    She specializes in the 800 meters. She competed in the women’s 800 meters at the 2017 World Championships.

    Charlene was part of Team USA setting world indoor record in the February 3 at 2018 Millrose Games in 8:05.89 – Chrishuna Williams (2:05.10), Raevyn Rogers (2:00.45), Charlene Lipsey (2:01.98), Ajee’ Wilson (1:58.37).

    She was a 3-time SEC champ in college and second in the NCAAs in 2010 and 2012.

    She also won the 1000m at the USA Indoor Championships in 2017.

    Her personal best in the 800: 1:57.38

    A pleasure to be joined this week, by an old friend from Racine Case High School, Brian Knudtson.

    Brian and Rick shared a homeroom for four years in high school.

    Brian has gone on to be a popular teacher and track coach in the Royall School District in Wisconsin.

    Brian was a standout athlete in high school and discusses what it it like now to coach Track and Field at a small school.

    He also decided to show his creative side and made some unique track and field sculptures. We talk about that and a lot more.

    There are 1000’s of tennis racquets out there. Where you are looking for a racquet that is functional or something to put on your wall as a piece of art, Mike helps guide you through the tennis racquet collecting universe.

    As a collector, Mike feels that part of his responsibility is education others about the history and value of racquets. We then talk about Mike’s collection, how scarcity and values are determined. In the age of social media, Mike is very active with other racquet enthusiasts on Facebook.

    From wood to racquets made with all sorts of materials, Mike says, it’s about the hunt and discovering something that he’s never seen before.

Alaska produces more wild seafood than all other states combined and accounts for about 60% of the nation’s commercial fisheries.

    Zakita Edinborough, ‘The Limbo Queen’ from UniverSoul Circus

    Ladies and Gentlemen! Prepare to be amazed.

    Well, at least prepare for “The Limbo Queen,” Zakita from the UniverSoul Circus.

    UniverSoul Circus opens in Atlanta at Atlantic Station’s Pinnacle Lot this weekend and is scheduled to run through May 26 — marking the first time that the UniverSoul Big Top has set up at Atlantic Station.

    The touring show was created by concert and theater promoter Cedric Walker, who combined elements of live theater, high-powered concerts, and circus arts to create a unique blend of family-friendly entertainment. The first UniverSoul Circus show was held back in 1994 in Atlanta and was an immediate hit, leading to multi-city tours and acclaim from around the world.

    Current acts in the show include a Caribbean Carnivale, the incredible Havana Night Skaters, Extreme Riders (yes, they even fly motorbikes under the tent), and the Wheel of Death.

    The Atlantic Station Pinnacle Lot is located at 241 20th Street Northwest in Atlanta. Park in the Atlantic Station parking deck and you get two free hours of parking.

    Rick is joined by Zakita this week. Hailing from Trinidad and Tobago, Kita has been performing in the UniverSoul Circus for eight years. Hear as she explains that the Limbo is the national dance of Trinidad and Tobago and what life is like traveling in a touring circus.

    The whole UniverSoul Circus is delighted to be in Atlanta for 10 days.
