    Steve Perry Celebrates "The Season"

As Christmas nears, we caught up with the legendary rock vocalist Steve Perry, a certified Rock & Roll Hall of Famer who first made his name as the former lead singer for Journey before going on to a successful solo career with era-defining '80s hits like "Oh Sherrie" and "Foolish Heart." The occasion for this chat is the release of Perry's Holiday themed album of sentimental standards, The Season 3 (his first for Dark Horse Records). Since Steve doesn't do many interviews, Paul seized the opportunity to ask Perry about singing for the late great Quincy Jones on "We Are The World," or the story behind Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" ending up in the finale of HBO's The Sopranos. Paul even made sure to ask Steve to weigh in on the whole Yacht Rock discourse.  The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music.  Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton. RSD BLACK FRIDAY SPECIAL, Pt. 1, Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna)

Record Store Day Black Friday is November 29, and as we ramp up to the big day we offer the first of two specials. Pt. 1 features Jorma Kaukonen, founding member of the Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, talking about the double album RENO ROAD, a collection of acoustic blues field recordings made with his longtime musical accomplice Jack Casady and released on Black Friday as an RSD Exclusive. In this conversation, Jorma recalls the heady times of the 1960s, and pays his respects to many of the fallen legends he's worked with over the years, including Paul Kantner, Janis Joplin, David Crosby, Phil Lesh, and even Jaco Pastorius. Hippo Campus, plus Mike Myers remembers Quincy Jones (1933-2024)

Happy November, anything important going on this week? Meanwhile, here at the Record Store Day Podcast, we're talking about, what else?, music. Twin Cities band Hippo Campus have just released their fourth album, Flood (in stores now on the Psychic Hotline label) and bassist Zach Sutton and guitarist Nathan Stocker are here to unpack the whole thing. Plus, as we were mixing this week's show we learned of the passing of a giant of music and recording, Quincy Jones, at the age of 91, so Paul asked his brother Mike Myers to share his immediate reaction to the news, and remember Q's integral contributions to his Austin Powers series, onscreen and off.  The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music.  Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton. Joe Boyd

Joe Boyd has had many job descriptions over the course of his nearly sixty-year career in music, and there was simply no way to cover everything in this conversation. That said, Paul and Joe focus on Boyd's important new book, And The Roots of Rhythm Remain: A Journey Through Global Music, and themes of cultural cross-pollination in music, the birth of hip hop and ska, the reason Hitler spared the life of virtuoso Roma guitarist Django Reinhardt, what happened with Nick Drake, and Boyd's phenomenal earlier book, the memoir, White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s.  As a music producer, Boyd has delivered records by Nick Drake, Pink Floyd, R.E.M., Taj Mahal, Fairport Convention, Richard and Linda Thompson, Sandy Denny. He tour-managed European dates for Muddy Waters, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and was a production manager at the 1965 Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals, before flying off to open Elektra Records' UK office in London where he and John Hopkins opened the UFO club, giving a psychedelic home to Pink Floyd and others.  In 1971 he moved to Los Angeles to work for Warner Brothers Films (Deliverance, A Clockwork Orange, and the documentary Jimi Hendrix). In 1979, he worked for Lorne Michaels' film company, Broadway Pictures, and the following year, launched his own label, Hannibal Records, releasing works by John Cale, Richard Thompson and more, while bringing global artists such as ¡Cubanismo!, Toumani Diabaté, Ali Farka Touré, Trio Bulgarka, and Songhai, to western audiences.
