    'Climate migration' and the South; NC's longleaf pine and bald cypress

    Our focus today is on the environment. North Carolinians have come to expect damaging hurricanes on the coast, but the devastation brought by Helene in the mountains has upended what many of us thought we knew about “safe” places to live. How could damaging storms, extreme heat, and sea level rise impact migration in our region? Abrahm Lustgarten has been reporting on “climate migration” for many years and turns his lens toward the South. Then, environmental historian Daniel Lewis shares stories of the longleaf pine and the bald cypress, two trees entwined in the history of North Carolina.

    The new documentary "American Coup: Wilmington 1898"

    A coup d'etat on American soil. That’s the basis for a new documentary by PBS NC and American Experience premiering today, Nov. 12, 2024.  The directors of the film speak with Leoneda Inge about the historic massacre and coup. And, a conversation with two descendants on opposite sides of the violent massacre, who have reconciled and want more people to learn this history.  Guests Brad Lichtenstein, director of "American Coup: Wilmington 1898" Yoruba Richen, director of "American Coup: Wilmington 1898" Kieran Haile, great-great-grandson of Alex Manly, editor and publisher of The Daily Record, Wilmington’s only Black-owned newspaper at the time of the events. He is married to Priscilla Haile, who also appears in the film. Lucy McCaule, great-granddaughter of William Barry McKoy, a Princeton graduate and lawyer who later became the grandmaster of the Masons in Wilmington and was one of the heads of the White Government Unions.

    Purple Ballot: analysis of NC election results; new play 'Changing Same: The Cold-Blooded Murder of Booker T. Spicely'

    Two political scientists sit down with co-host Jeff Tiberii to unpack the election results in North Carolina. We were again a ticket splitting state - a look at why, and our 'purple ballot' history. Plus, how Trump won NC, a look at other state races, and what comes next. Guests Chris Cooper, Robert Lee Madison Distinguished Professor and Director of Public Policy Institute at Western Carolina University, and author of Anatomy of a Purple State: A North Carolina Politics Primer Michael Bitzer, Politics Department Chair and Professor of Politics and History, Catawba College Then... In 1944, a Black Army private was shot and killed in Durham, NC by a white bus driver. In recent years, community members have been hard at work to honor the life of Private Booker T. Spicely, who was killed after challenging Jim Crow laws. Last year, a historical marker was erected near the place he was gunned down. Today, a new play “Changing Same: The Cold-Blooded Murder of Booker T. Spicely” begins its run, exploring Spicely’s life and the racial violence that ended it. Co-host Leoneda Inge talks with the co-writers of the new production and the head of the Booker T. Spicely Committee about Spicely’s legacy and about what has not changed since he was killed eighty years ago. Guests James Williams, chairman of the Booker T.
