Sleep is crucial for our health and well-being, yet many of us don't get enough. In fact, one in three adults don't get the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep a night, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). And, not surprisingly, a lack of sleep can have serious consequences. "Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to weight gain, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes," the CDC says. So how can we get the shut-eye we need? There are a number of things we can do to improve our sleep habits, including: • Establishing a regular sleep schedule • Exercising regularly • Managing stress • Creating a sleep-friendly environment But one of the most effective things we can do is listen to calming, relaxing music or sounds before bedtime. Studies have shown that listening to calming music or sounds can help us fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly. And that's where ASMR comes in. ASMR, or autonomous sensory meridian response, is a tingling sensation that typically begins in the head and moves down the spine. It's often triggered by certain sounds, such as whispering, crinkling, or tapping. ASMR has become increasingly popular in recent years, with a growing number of people using it to help them relax and fall asleep. There are a number of ASMR channels on YouTube, and a number of ASMR artists have released albums of ASMR tracks. One of the most popular ASMR channels is Sleep Calming, which has more than 500 episodes, each with eight hours of ASMR sounds. The channel's description says the sounds are perfect for "relaxation, meditation, studying, and focusing." I decided to give it a try. I started with the channel's most popular episode, "Thunderstorm." The episode is more than two hours long, and it features a number of different ASMR sounds, including rain, thunder, and the sounds of the environment. I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical at first. But after a few minutes, I started to feel more relaxed. And after a few more minutes, I was asleep. I woke up feeling rested and refreshed, and I definitely slept more soundly than I had in a long time. If you're looking for a way to relax and fall asleep, I highly recommend giving ASMR a try.
