    Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro is among the leaders calling for an end to political violence following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. In April, Shapiro and his family were the target of an apparent assassination attempt when a man broke into the governor's mansion and allegedly started a fire as they slept inside. The 77th Emmy Awards are on Sunday, airing on CBS. Topping the comedy category is "The Studio" with 23 nominations. Meanwhile, in the drama category, "Severance" snagged 27 nominations.     A Look Back At Charlie Kirk's Life And Impact On Politics | Usher Talks New Fragrance Campaign

    Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist and ally of President Trump, was shot and killed Wednesday as he hosted one of his campus debates at Utah Valley University. A witness described the moment a single gunshot was fired, saying, "people started screaming." Investigators say it appears the shooter in the killing of Charlie Kirk acted alone and it was a targeted act. FBI director Kash Patel said law enforcement had someone in custody, suspected of the killing, but hours later, that person was released. CBS News' Scott MacFarlane reports. Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was a close ally to President Trump. A fixture at Mar-A-Lago, he advised Mr. Trump on some of his Cabinet picks. He was also an early champion of JD Vance to be the president's running mate. In a four-minute video recorded from the Oval Office, Mr. Trump described Kirk, saying, "he's a martyr for truth and freedom and there has never been someone who was so respected by youth." Charlie Kirk motivated young Republicans through his organization, Turning Point USA. He used podcasts and campus tours to build his political movement. CBS News' Nancy Cordes looks at his impact.     What Newly Released Epstein Files Reveal | Preparing For The Next Pandemic

    President Trump said he plans to mobilize the National Guard to curb violence in Chicago, saying, "Well, we're going in. I didn't say when we're going in." He also made a direct appeal to the state's governor. The Chicago mayor's office says overall violent crime is down nearly 22% this year. China's Xi Jinping welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea's Kim Jong Un, along with other world leaders, for a huge military parade showing off new technology. It was meant to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, but also carried a broader message of unity among the U.S. adversaries. A House committee released thousands of pages of DOJ documents related to Jeffrey Epstein Tuesday night. A CBS News review shows a lot of the material was already public. However, it does include previously unseen security camera video of Epstein's jail cell on the night he died and some of Epstein's flight logs. CBS News' Nikole Killion reports. CBS News' Scott MacFarlane breaks down what to know about the more than 33,000 pages related to Jeffrey Epstein released by a House panel and what it means for the Trump administration, which has faced increasing pressure over the documents. In California on Tuesday, a jury took less than an hour to clear Cardi B of assault allegations made in a $24 million civil lawsuit. A security guard claimed the rap star attacked her in 2018. McDonald's announced it is bringing back "Extra Value Meals" starting Sept. 8 in an effort to attract budget-conscious customers. CBS News' Jo Ling Kent reports on what to expect. A new report by the American Cancer Society found rates of prostate cancer increased 3% a year from 2014 to 2021. The steepest increase was for advanced stage diagnoses.
