Session 387: Chasing the Bag Without Losing Your Mind

Social media has the ability to make running a business look glamorous, but the reality of being an entrepreneur is often a lot more complex. And as Black women, the pressure is always on to be excellent, magical, and do everything ourselves, often leading to an imbalance between our businesses and our mental health. Thus week we're diving into a discussion of entrepreneurship and mental health with returning podcast guest, Melissa Ifill. Melissa is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker serving clients in New York, Georgia, and Florida. During our conversation, we explored the ways in which our identities and traumas have the potential to show up in our businesses, how ideas of “Black excellence” can leave us stuck in a cycle of burnout, and learning how to ask and receive help from your community. TBG U: Becoming An Entrepreneur

Get ready, because class is almost in session. Welcome to the Therapy For Black Girls University podcast tailored for the 20-something who’s packing for a new year on campus, thinking through their gap year, enrolling in a community college, grabbing their stoles for graduation, and everything in between. Black girls have always been the queens of having one or two side hustles at once, especially in college, when you can count on your dorm-mate to be a lash tech, braider, and even a tailor. But what happens when you decide it’s time to upgrade your side hustle into a full-on business? Well, our guest knows a lot about that. Today, we're joined by the founder of the lifestyle wear brand STRIPT, Arianna Davis. Ari is an attorney-turned-entrepreneur and a double graduate of Howard University. In our conversation today, we discuss Ari’s journey from Howard Law student to full-time entrepreneur, how to shoot your shot with big names in order to grow your business, and strategies for balancing textbooks with checkbooks. BONUS: An Industrial Psychologist’s Perspective on HBO’s Industry

With its no-bars-held look into the insidious world of investment banking, many of us fell in love with the HBO MAX series INDUSTRY, and more specifically, its non-traditional lead character, Harper Stern. Harper’s brash and unapologetic maneuvering through the gritty political world set her up as a breakout character for the series and an interesting and unexpected deviation from the strong Black woman trope. Joining me this week for a deeper dive into Harper's character is Organizational Psychologist, Nchopia Nwokoma, who speaks to how relationships with organizations and communities impact how individuals show up in the workplace. During our conversation, we unpack Harper’s journey across three seasons, reflecting on what her victories and challenges at PeerPoint might teach us about our own workplaces. Session 386: Unmasking AI w/ Dr. Joy Buolamwini

The future is here, and it looks like deepfakes of real people saying fake things, chatbots claiming to have human-level consciousness, and evil robots ready to take everyone’s jobs. Artificial Intelligence, while only just recently becoming widespread and accessible, is transforming our world in ways that make understanding it more crucial than ever. Joining me for today’s important conversation on the ethical implications of AI is Dr. Joy Buolamwini. She is the founder of the Algorithmic Justice League, an award-winning researcher, and poet of code. Dr. Joy is the author of the national best-selling book, Unmasking AI: My Mission to Protect What is Human in a World of Machines. During our conversation, we examined some of the basic definitions, players, and concerns associated with AI, how biases are transferred in the creation of AI and then reflected in its application, and lastly, the specific challenges AI poses particularly for communities of color. Session 385: Diabetes Digital with Wendy & Jess

Many of you in our community are familiar with Wendy and Jess of the Food Heaven podcast, who joined us in 2022 for a conversation about developing a healthy relationship with food. Well, the dynamic duo of BFFs and registered dietician nutritionists are back — this time in honor of National Diabetes Month — to discuss their new platform, Diabetes Digital. Diabetes Digital is an insurance-covered telehealth platform designed to empower individuals to manage and prevent diabetes through 1:1 virtual nutrition counseling. During my conversation with Wendy and Jess, we discuss not just how you might benefit from getting involved with their new platform, but also how to generally manage stress, diet, and lifestyle concerns that may come up after a diabetes or prediabetes diagnosis.  About the Podcast The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Own Words w/ Director Nneka Onuorah

Last week, Amazon dropped the highly-anticipated documentary Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Own Words, directed by Nneka Onuorah. It’s no secret how much we love Megan over here, and this documentary brilliantly showcases the rise of one of the most charismatic and lovable rappers in the game, while also allowing Megan to be vulnerable in discussions of her mental health after several tragedies.  Today I'm joined by the director, Nneka, to learn more about how she approached the documentary. During our conversation she gives us a behind-the-scenes look at how the film was created, while also discussing what she hopes you’ll take away from the film, especially when it comes to ideas like grief and wellness in the Black community. Session 384: Building a Brand w/ Bea Dixon of The HoneyPot

Did you know that November is National Entrepreneurship Month? Being a business owner looks different for everyone, whether you’re a therapist scheduling back to back clients or a candle maker making the candles that leave our homes smelling incredible. In acknowledgment of all the dynamic Black women entrepreneurs in our community, we’ve prepared a series of conversations that provide insight into what it looks like to grow your business while also maintaining a healthy well-being. This week, I’m joined by Bea Dixon, the founder of plant-based feminine care brand, The HoneyPot. Dixon is 1 of the first 40 women of color to raise one million in venture capital and has been featured in the Today Show, The New York Times, ELLE, ESSENCE and Forbes, to name a few. During our conversation, we discussed the importance of using your intuition when running a business, lessons Bea has learned from controversy, and what the future of the HoneyPot looks like post-acquisition.
