    WHAT’S AT ISSUE HERE?

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Tune in Monday to hear host Terri Wilke speak with Matthew Meloy of Workers Strike Back, an independent, rank-and-file movement organizing against the bosses and their political servants. https://www.workersstrikeback.org/ https://www.facebook.com/workersstrikeback/ Workers Strike Back has recently been active in our area in support of the Jill Stein campaign for U.S. President.  They hosted an event at the Lucille Blanford Kansas City Public Library which many of you might have attended on September 11th.  If you missed the event, our guest Matthew Meloy will provide a recap.  The concerns of Workers Strike Back is to end the genocidal war in Gaza, to increase the minimum wage to $25 an hour, to cancel student loan debt and to provide Medicare for all. We’ll play our calendar at the midpoint of the hour. During the second half of Jaws of Justice, host Melvin Merritt will speak with Bishop Frank Douglas of Heart of the Father Initiative.  Heart of the Father Initiative is ready to equip and impact men to become better fathers. They helping families with homicide events to navigate their loved one's loss via Project Relentless. https://www.facebook.com/p/Heart-of-the-Father-Initiative-100083948901805/?paipv=0&eav=AfbggdUDDGtIHmIALTqFGMoupdJA5gAqcAn5vZFg7u_oa7-GCwZ8XQIFjEVHSNXJorU&_rdr In 2019, tragedy altered the life of a church-going, God-fearing family in Kansas City. Bishop Frank and Lady Carmen Douglas of Beth-Judah Ministries lost their son, Cameron, when he was shot and killed at the age of 23. Cameron left behind a baby girl. Frank Douglas was distraught at seeing his granddaughter left fatherless and made it his mission to see that such tragedy would not happen to another family. Douglas saw an opportunity for community growth. Knowing the lack of positive father figures in Black American culture, Douglas was empathetic to families in similar situations. If certain deficits could be healed, he believed, violent crime by Black youth would decrease. And so, Heart of the Father Initiative was born.  They want to help you discover your purpose via Innovative Seed Group, This or That, Advantage Love.   On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are. HEAR PRISON FROM THE EYES OF ONE WHO EXPERIENCES IT

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Tune in Monday to hear host Terri Wilke speak with Chris Gilyard, an inmate at Crossroads Correctional Center located in Cameron, Missouri.  Chris reached out to Jaws of Justice.  He was interviewed using the telephone. We will play the calendar in the midpoint of our hour. Jaws of Justice is an information platform on criminal justice system involvement. Our objective is to inform, compare and share testimonials on conditions of detention with regards to fundamental rights. While prison environments are often opaque, Jaws of Justice offers rigorous, independent and accessible information about detention conditions. The fate of prisoners will vary considerably from one prison to another, and sometimes within the same facility. Our listeners will be made able to see prison through the eyes of those who experience it. Testimonials go beyond technical aspects of detention, putting human experience at the heart of the narrative. They provide words, stories and images to describe the detention conditions experienced by millions of people and create a fuller picture. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are. MEET 3 DAUGHTERS AND 1000 SONS; KANSAS APPLESEED ADDRESSES DRIVERS LICENSE SUSPENSION B/C OF UNPAID COURT FEES AND FINES

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Tune in Monday to hear host Bev Livingston speak with Sandra Kay Keely, Executive Director of 2 Daughters and 1000 Sons. https://3daughtersand1000sons.info/   The 3 Daughters and 1000 Sons story began with a passion to relieve the devastation communities of color feel as a result of mass incarceration.   Sandra Kay Keely, was stunned in 1988 with the news that her only brother, Calvin Keeley, was being sentenced to 50 years in a Michigan State prison. 48% of the approximately 206,000 individuals serving life and ‘virtual life’ sentences are African American, and 15% are Latino according to The Sentencing Project numbers from 2018. That began her journey down a path to impact the lives of the justice involved through advocacy that includes career and housing development, as well as court supervision.  3 Daughters and 1000 Sons is a three-legged stool that supports family reunification, neighborhood revitalization, and economic freedom. Their dedicated team of experts and advocates work tirelessly to promote fairness, equality, and rehabilitation. Their mission is to revitalize families, communities, and economic aspirations of individuals impacted by the criminal justice system.  We want to transform the criminal justice system and build a brighter future. After the calendar, in the second half of our hour, host Terri Wilke will speak with Mike Fonkert, Deputy Director of Kansas Appleseed. https://www.kansasappleseed.org/ As Deputy Director, Mike oversees policy initiatives, manages the Just Campaign, and works with communities, policymakers and legislators on issues related to juvenile justice, criminal justice and child welfare. Kansas Appleseed is a justice center network that works to advance the rule of law, reduce poverty, and combat discrimination. In 2021, Mike Fonkert, campaign director for Kansas Appleseed, said that suspending licenses for unpaid court fees and fines is an ineffective policy that can worsen poverty and economic harms in Kansas. Fonkert also said that ending this practice should apply retroactively to anyone whose license is currently suspended for this reason. We’ll learn the status of the campaign. ROSLYN TEMPLE WITH KC MOTHERS IN CHARGE and KARLA JUAREZ WITH AIRRKC

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Tune in Monday to hear host Melvin Merritt speak with Roslyn Temple, Founder and Program Director of KC Mothers in Charge. https://www.kcmothersincharge.org/ On a cold November night in Kansas City, a concerned single mother stood afraid and alone on a dark street. She had been trying to contact her son, Antonio “Pee Wee” Thompson, all day and he did not answer.  She drove to where he had recently moved. She knocked but received no answer.  She called 911…and waited. When the first responders emerged from his apartment, her worst fears were confirmed.  Her son had been murdered on Thanksgiving eve, 2011. Over a six-hour period, Rosilyn Temple remained at the scene, wondering about the policemen and fire department personnel who had been dispatched. She could not believe there was no community liaison and she knew there had to a better way to support victims’ families. So she created one. Temple learned about Mothers in Charge, Inc., founded in Philadelphia and in 2013, Temple launched a Kansas City chapter of Mothers in Charge as a program of Kansas City’s Ad Hoc Group Against Crime.   Their mission is to reduce violent crime through prevention, education and intervention, and to guide and support the families of victims. Their  vision is a KC community safe for all, where families are empowered and supported. After the calendar, in the second half of our hour, I will speak with Karla Juarez, Ex. Director of AIRRKC, or Advocates for Immigrant Rights and Reconciliation. https://www.airrkc.org/ AIRR is striving to create a network that supports and empowers the undocumented immigrant community in the greater Kansas City area. The network provides tools and resources for people to be able to navigate their lives with confidence and pride. No person should live in fear of being torn apart from their family or home.

    IMPROVING CORRECTIONAL HEALTH CARE

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Tune in Monday to hear host Terri Wilke speak with her guests, Kim Sterling and Richard Forbus who are both with the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. https://www.ncchc.org/ The mission of the National Commission on Correctional Health Care is to improve the quality of health care in jails, prisons, and juvenile confinement facilities.  NCCHC is supported by the major national organizations representing the fields of health, mental health, law, and corrections. Each supporting organization has named a liaison to the NCCHC board of representatives to create a robust, multidisciplinary governing structure that reflects the complexities of correctional health care. NCCHC’s origins date to the early 1970s, when an American Medical Association study of jails found inadequate, disorganized health services and a lack of national standards. In collaboration with other organizations, the AMA established a program that in 1983 became an independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization: the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC). Forty years later, NCCHC remains the only national organization dedicated solely to improving correctional health care quality. They do that by establishing rigorous standards for health services in correctional facilities, operating a voluntary accreditation program for institutions that meet those standards, offering certification for correctional health professionals, conducting educational conferences and webinars, and producing industry-specific publications and other resources. For 40 years, NCCHC’s highly respected standards have provided uniquely valuable guidance to help correctional health professionals and administrators improve the health of their incarcerated populations (and the communities to which they return), increase efficiency of health services delivery, strengthen organizational effectiveness, and reduce the risk of adverse legal judgments. Established by health, mental health, legal, and corrections professions, NCCHC’s standards cover the areas of patient care and treatment, governance and administration, personnel and training, safety and disease prevention, special needs and services, and medical-legal issues. These essential resources are written in separate volumes for prisons, jails, and juvenile confinement facilities, plus a manual for mental health services and another for opioid treatment programs. Kim Sterling is VP of Professional Services & Marketing with NCCHC.  Richard Forbus, a Certified Correctional Health Professional, is VP of Program Development with NCCHC. HOST BEV LIVINGSTON SPEAKS WITH TAMICKA MONSON; HOST TERRI WILKE SPEAKS WITH KATHY KELLY – TUNE IN!

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Tune in Monday to hear host Bev Livingston speak with her guest, Tamicka Monson, a professional counselor at Tamicka Monson Counseling LLC. They will discuss her book, Where Daddy Lives and more will be shared! Tamicka holds three degrees, including a Master of Science in counseling psychology from the University of Kansas. She is extremely passionate about identity work. Through individual and group counseling, speaking, and writing, Tamicka helps others heal, grow, and become the best version of themselves. As a dedicated speaker for over fifteen years, Tamicka uses her skills to reach out to hurting individuals within communities. Her topics include mental and emotional healing and living as a whole person after experiencing trauma. She also speaks to community leaders about social justice (such as gun violence, mass incarceration, and poverty) affecting minority communities. Furthermore, having worked in childcare, youth development, education, and mental health, she challenges educators to consider the unique struggles of those within minority and poverty-stricken communities and how these struggles affect them. Tamicka’s most recent publication is her children’s book entitled Where Daddy Lives, about children of incarcerated parents. She has written articles and has been featured on several podcasts and radio stations, including 90.7 KJHK and 90.9 The Bridge. Additionally, she is a rap artist and songwriter and uses her music to bring healing to others. For more information on Tamicka's work, visit https://www.tamickamonsoncounseling.com/   After the calendar, in the second half of our hour, host Terri Wilke will speak with Kathy Kelly, Board President of World BEYOND War (WBW), a global movement to end all wars. https://worldbeyondwar.org/ WBW was founded on January 1st, 2014 to create a global movement to abolish the institution of war itself, not just the “war of the day.” If war is ever to be abolished, then it must be taken off the table as a viable option. Just as there is no such thing as “good” or necessary slavery, there is no such thing as a “good” or necessary war. Both institutions are abhorrent and never acceptable, no matter the circumstances. So, if we can’t use war to resolve international conflicts, what can we do? Finding a way to transition to a global security system that is supported by international law, diplomacy, collaboration, and human rights, and defending those things with nonviolent action rather than the threat of violence, is the heart of WBW.  Their work includes education that dispels myths, like “War is natural” or “We have always had war,” and shows people not only that war should be abolished, but also that it actually can be. Their work includes all variety of nonviolent activism that moves the world in the direction of ending all war. Kathy Kelly lives in Chicago and she was in Kansas City for peace demonstrations at the National Security Campus, operated by Honeywell, this past May, 2024.  The National Security Campus is in the news again because band they are hiring and the number of employees makes Honeywell the largest employer in the Kansas City area – let’s ask, why have so many Kansas Citians employed making nuclear weapons?   Just one more thing – we want to thank everyone who gave money to KKFI during our pledge drive!  KKFI is listener supported radio and with your help, more good radio will be coming your way. IMPERFECT VICTIMS – CRIMINALIZED SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Tune in Monday to hear host Terri Wilke speak with her guest, Leigh Goodmark, about her latest book, Imperfect Victims: Criminalized Survivors and the Promise of Abolition Feminism, which has been named one of the Best Books of 2023 by Progressive Magazine! Be prepared to get angry. Through a blend of shocking stories and even more outrageous statistics, Goodmark challenges and complicates our country's dominant narratives about violence and safety. The main lesson of Imperfect Victims is not that police and prisons keep us safe from gender-based violence, but the opposite - that the legal system not only continually fails - but further punishes survivors of gender-based violence. Goodmark challenges us to rethink long-ingrained notions of violence, safety, healing and punishment. Leigh Goodmark puts forth a call to jettison the current American criminal legal system as a response to domestic violence.  Goldmark’s decades of work representing victims of domestic violence inform this thorough and heartbreaking study of the myriad ways that our legal system fails survivors of intimate partner violence; she shows how innovative abolitionist approaches to intervening in violence and repairing harm are not only possible, but the essential way forward. Leigh Goodmark has been questioning the criminal legal system's response to gender-based violence for more than twenty years.  In her books, articles, and media appearances Professor Goodmark has argued that the criminal legal system fails to decrease or deter gender-based violence and punishes the victims of that violence.  Professor Goodmark's critique of the criminal legal system is grounded in her twenty-five years of representing people abused by their partners and incarcerated survivors of violence abused by the state. https://leighgoodmark.com/ There will be an upcoming event on July 25th, 2024, 6 PM, at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Missouri Public Library, sponsored by the Women’s Equality Coalition. Leigh Goodmark will lead a panel discussion on the issue of better ways for our legal system to hear the cases from survivors of violence involving intimate partners and assure that the victim of crime does not become the victim of the criminal justice system.
