Sectarianism and Scottish football - with Andrew Smith

Sectarianism in Scotland has never been far from the headlines over the past 50 years. In the first episode of The Scotsman’s new ‘Weekend Bigots’ podcast, Kevan Christie interviews sports journalist Andrew Smith, who talks about the historical context to the rivalry between Rangers and Celtic. They discuss how Irish-Catholic immigrants were originally unwelcome in Glasgow and other cities in Scotland, which is why they set up Hibernian in Edinburgh in 1875 then Celtic in 1888.But with all that religious division in the past, why do the rivalries still run so deep? They discuss the issue in today's world of fake news and social media, and consider why sometimes fans cross the line.Credits:Mo Johnson signs for Rangers/ 10th July 1989 / Timestamp 0.22 - 0.30 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE674cACsRc&t=1192s9-Man Rangers draw 2-2 with Celtic in 1987/ Timestamp 1.37 - 1.45 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jG4MWUsvKFIOld Firm Riot 1980/ Timestamp 3.52 - 4.03 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5hL6UbstyE&t=273sWorld Cup 1994, Qualifying, Scotland - Italy/ Timestamp 2.33 - 2.41https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoU9wgL4PKI&t=1761sBBC Scotland and Rangers / 23rd Feb 2019- Jim Traynor/ Timestamp 0.00 - 0.12https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IhlZ6aLgTQ&t=423sDavid Murray - Rangers - Statement, August 2008/ Timestamp 1.02 - 1.14https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGHAtGbA1pE&t=36sMo Johnston signs for Rangers/ 10th July 1989/ Timestamp 1.42 - 2.07 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE674cACsRc&t=1192sMo Johnston signs for Rangers/ 10th July 1989/ Timestamp 1.09 - 1.33https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE674cACsRc&t=1192sMo Johnston signs for Rangers/ 10th July 1989 / Timestamp 0.56 - 1.07https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE674cACsRc&t=1192sThe Green Brigade marching to Celtic park/ 30th December 2019/ Timestamp 2.30 - 2.37 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FgpB1R8dHg&t=162s Learn more about your ad choices. The classroom and the dugout - with Terry Christie and Tom Hendrie

Playing football, managing professional teams and teaching the nation's youth is a unique combination. But in this week's episode of Weekend Bigots, Terry Christie and Tom Hendrie discuss the reality of juggling these roles.Christie, an ex-headmaster and manager of Meadowbank Thistle, Stenhousemuir and Alloa Athletic, is widely regarded as one of the best part-time managers this country has produced, and gained fame as the duffle-coat wearing cup shock specialist.Tom Hendrie is a former manager of St Mirren, Berwick Rangers and Alloa Athletic, and was once a pupil of Christie’s at Forrester High School in Edinburgh before going on - like his friend and mentor - to play professionally for Dundee FC.They both acknowledge that religious rivalries play a part in the Old Firm, and explain how much of this is learned behaviour from school. They also discuss how both sectarianism and racism in football can be tackled.Credits:Mo Johnson signs for Rangers/ 10th July 1989 / Timestamp 17.50 -18.05 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE674cACsRc&t=1192sJohn Greig v Celtic 1978/ Timestamp 0.2- 0.27 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jxuuYOgt-YAirdrie 0 St Mirren 3- 23rd February 1999/ Timestamp 0.01 - 0.30 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAUjm0hgUBoThe Nutmeg podcast/ Episode 29 Interview: Vic Kasule/ July 20th 2019/ Timestamp 16.52- 17.52 https://www.nutmegmagazine.co.uk/podcast/interview-vic-kasule/Hearts fans throw bananas at Walters/ 15th September 2012/ Timestamp 0.05- 0.40 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIbHx_NUDq4BBC Alba/ Manager Terry Christie/ Timestamp 2.06- 2.36 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYO3gXbvWqQ&t=222sThe Bubble Didnae Burst! - St Mirren/ 13 August 2011/ Timestamp 42.10 - 42.30 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEDX2_hNGFY&t=2555s Learn more about your ad choices.
