City College's Chaddock discusses climate, environment in 'Inside City: Election Edition'

Story by David J. Bohnet. San Diego City College geography professor Lisa Chaddock believes climate and the environment are crucial topics to discuss, not only in an election year, but every year. The environment continues to be a life-long passion of Chaddock's and she believes, as the advisor to the student chapter of the San Diego Bird Alliance at City, that the work they do can improve the environment and make an impact on many species, not just humans. “Being a part of this campus has allowed me to create a dynamic group of young people who want to go the same direction and do things to help the environment,” Chaddock said to CTTV's David J. Bohnet. This week on CTTV, City Times Media introduces Inside City: Election Edition, where Chaddock sits down for a one-on-one interview regarding the state of climate and the environment here in San Diego. The episode touches on Proposition 4 as outlined in City College Issue Guide on climate and the environment, re-wilding San Diego Bay, and ideas to better manage water in the region and throughout the state. VIDEO: City College’s Evans discusses housing, homelessness in ‘Inside City: Election Edition’

Michael Evans, program coordinator for Welcome Home City, joined City Times Media multimedia journalist Vince Outlaw on Oct. 23, 2024, to provide insights on the City College program “designed to support homeless and housing insecure City College students.” This episode of “Inside City: Election Edition” also discusses Welcome Home City’s long-term funding status, on-campus housing projected for 2028 and details the importance of voting and empathy in addressing the housing needs of the City College community. 28% of San Diego City College students responding to a 2023 RealCollege survey reported experiencing homelessness and 68% reported housing insecurity. “Housing and Homelessness” was the top issue on the City College Community Agenda with 62% of respondents selecting it as an issue they wanted candidates to address during the November 2024 campaign. CITY SPEAKS: Late growth spurt, persistence leads to NCAA Division I scholarship for City College pitcher Avery Laine

Hosted by Joe Panek, CTS Producer. Avery Laine, San Diego City College baseball pitcher and Pacific Coast Athletic Conference honorable mention recipient, talked about his journey from high school to an NCAA Division I scholarship at Loyola Marymount in this episode of “City Speaks.” Click here to view a transcript. Laine led the Knights in wins this season. He was third in ERA and second in strikeouts in the PCAC while playing only 12 games, six less than others in the conference. Laine experienced a growth spurt in his senior year of high school that led him to pursue baseball more competitively. After two seasons canceled due to COVID and a missed season because of injury, he put up an award-winning year and helped the Knights make the playoffs. Knights first baseman Jacob Pfitzner is also heard in the interview talking about Laine. Pfitzner led the state in home runs this season.
