Let’s Talk About It: The 6th Annual Blue Jacket Fashion Show & Zero-The End of Prostate Cancer Pt.1

The facts are the facts. It doesn’t feel good to keep a secret. And it doesn’t feel good to hold on to feelings of anxiousness or uncertainty. As women, we commune together often to talk openly about the pressing, and not so pressing aspects of our lives. We talk about work, our families, our personal relationships, our dreams, businesses, what happened on last night’s episode of Empire, etc. However, it has come to my attention that there is a particular conversation that isn’t happening within the space of our group chats, and quite frankly our community as a whole. The issue on the table that has always been present but unfortunately unnoticed is the concerning issue of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is astonishingly the second-leading cause of cancer death in men overall. As one ‘zeros’ in on the problem, black men are 1.8 times more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 2.2 times more likely to die from this disease as opposed to white men. With an issue so prevalent in our community, it begs a few questions. Why isn’t this topic a part of a regular discussion at our dinner tables? Why is this issue so prevalent in our particular community? What can we do to see these numbers go down to, well, zero? After having the honor of speaking with prostate cancer survivor and mentor Mical J. Roy, VP of Health Equity at the 501(c)(3) non-profit Zero, Dr. Reggie Tucker-Seeley, and fashion designer Fredrick Anderson these inquires not only found refuge from uncertainty, but found educators, leaders, creators, and organizations such as Zero-The End of Prostate Cancer who are driven to ensure that this conversation has a safe and secure space to be up for discussion for everyone, particularly men, on a national level. This is a discussion where we can fight prostate cancer so that we may further ensure and acquire a safe and relevant space for men to not only convene to speak on these matters, but to celebrate themselves. The sixth annual Blue Jacket Fashion show, sponsored by Janssen Oncology-who matched donations made to Zero-The End of Prostate Cancer, commenced on February 17th to stir the grounds for this conversation.

Olympian Gail Devers: The Path to Longevity

After retiring from a successful career in track and field as a five-time Olympian, three of which were gold medals, and living through the complications of a debilitating disease, there’s still no stopping Gail Devers. Even retired, she finds herself healthier and more fit than ever! Eating Cake with Comedian Anastasia Washington Pt. 2

In 1789, Marie-Antoinette is famously known to have stated in the French dialect “Qu’ils mangent de la brioche”— “Let them eat cake.” Many have fathomed that she stated this oblivious remark upon learning her peasant subjects had nothing to eat. Antoinette’s callous remark was said because she had no understanding of the conditions and daily lives of the ordinary people she governed. Consequently, she became the most hated figure of her time. Although studies have found otherwise, it is this statement which has led some to believe was the cause of the revolution that made her lose her head. While comedian Anastasia Washington is no Marie-Antoinette, this particular queen not only gives the same sentiment (albeit for different reasons), but has a solid understanding of the people she comes in contact with. Indeed, we may not be starving peasants, however, Washington offers a new meaning to the solution of eating cake, on Wednesdays in particular. Washington is an Actress, Comedian, Podcaster, Writer, Director, Singer, Curvy Model, Comic Con Panelist, and Dancehall Queen. As one reads on, one can clearly note that this bi-racial boss lady with curves, curls and sass utilizes her many talents for good by breaking down barriers and giving a voice to those who need it. Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too?

A Conversation with ‘We Need to Talk’ Podcast Host Malynda Hale

Singer, Actress, Host and Activist Malynda Hale uses every ounce of her voice through not only her music but also through her podcast We Need to Talk and her photo and video series Black Voices Heard. Hale is an ambitious black queen who has made it her goal to see people from all walks of life understand our narrative in the black community. Her music uplifts the heart and makes one want to continue the journey of this thing called life. She is noble, resilient, and open as a leader. These traits have propelled her path to having important conversations concerning change with social justice, female empowerment, LGBTQ+ rights, veganism, and the Black Lives Matter movement. Hale’s dedication to her music and life mission have made her work hard to earn impressive awards such as “Best Female Vocalist” at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, Best Pop Music Video at the Indie Music Channel Awards, a headliner for the NAMM show on the main stage and for the Sennheiser stage. She has opened for performers including Tyrone Wells, Ernie Halter, Levi Kreis, OTOWN and Smokey Robinson. In a recent conversation with Hale, we gain a deeper look at what motivates her as someone who is talented in so many different areas of her life.
