    2020.04.11 Google Meet & Google Chat / Adios S Voice / Contact Tracing / Your Stimulus Payment

    In this episode of BTLR, we start off the news by poking a little fun at Google, as they are notorious for changing their services and features up at the drop of a hat, in this specific case we're talking about how Hangouts Meet became Google Meet, and Hangouts Chat was re-re-branded Google Chat.   We're also discussing Samsung and their decision to kill off their own proprietary digital assistant S Voice. And of course a day can't go by where we can't talk about how the Coronavirus pandemic is effecting literally everything, in this case we're discussing how Apple and Google are apparently teaming up to create a contact tracing tool to track who has the virus, who they gave it to, and who gave it to them. And finally, (Pay no attention to the thumbnail of this episode, there was a slight mistake there), we'll be talking about the IRS setting up a forthcoming website to help you track where your stimulus payment is.

    In this edition of BTLR, we'll be exploring the Covid-19 screening app and website that Apple released, which you can use at this link.  After that, we discuss a disturbing trend called "Zoom bombing" and how you can protect yourself against it if you use services like Zoom. Followed up with a little about the future of Apple's Mac line up, and the notorious "Notch".  Is that controversial little "feature" found on current higher end iPhones making its way to the Mac?  Well, it's possible. Then finally, a little about Google's video chat service Duo, and how Google has upped the participant level from 8 to 12 of your closest friends.

    Apple has released a shiny new iPad Pro with a new and redesigned keyboard that happens to come with a magic trackpad. The iPhone 9 has apparently entered mass production. There seems to be a new Fitbit Charge on the way. Spotify is ending support for 3rd party DJ apps.

    2020.03.14; Bill Gates Leaving The MSFT Board / WWDC 2020 Is Happening / Keep Your Smartphone Clean / Data Caps Suspended

    Microsoft announced on Friday that Bill Gates is leaving the board, effective Friday. Gates is also stepping down from his position on the board of Berkshire Hathaway. Apple announced on Friday that its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June will be held online because of the coronavirus pandemic. Along with washing your hands and face multiple times a day, you should also wash that extension of your hand and breeding ground for germs — your phone. Tests done by scientists show that the virus can live for two to three days on plastic and stainless steel. As schools suspend classes, businesses close and companies ask their employees to work from home during the spread of the novel coronavirus, the pressure on communications networks will rise. Comcast and AT&T are the first internet providers to respond by extending data caps.

    Google I/O has been cancelled over Coronavirus concerns. SXWS has also been cancelled for the same reasons. Please for the love of all that is holy, don’t break your iPhone!  You may have problems getting a replacement.  I’ll give you one guess why. And Finally, Twitter got struck by the Good Idea Fairy this week as they beta test something they’re calling “Fleets”.

    China Bans Plague Inc. / YouTube's 'Creator Liason' / Surface Duo Early Launch? / Disney And A Lost iPhone

    Plague Inc. maker Ndemic Creations says the game has been removed from sale on the iOS App Store in China because the relevant authorities say it “includes content that is illegal in China as determined by the Cyberspace Administration of China.” YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki has repeatedly said that YouTube is trying to be more transparent with creators about changes that will affect their day-to-day lives. The next evolution in that plan is appointing the company’s first ever “head creator liaison” to help keep the peace. Last October, Microsoft gave the public a little taste of its dual-screened Surface Duo. The phone is due to be officially unveiled during this October's Surface event and hit the market during the 2020 holiday shopping season. But we could get a much earlier launch of the Surface Duo according to Windows Central. Citing sources said to be familiar with the matter, the software and hardware are finished and that could allow Microsoft to unveil and release the Duo well ahead of schedule.     iPhone's Default Apps / Microsoft's Offline Accounts / Sony's Backward Compatibility / Mom's TikTok App Warning

    Apple Inc. is considering giving rival apps more prominence on iPhones and iPads and opening its HomePod speaker to third-party music services after criticism the company provides an unfair advantage to its in-house products. Once again, Microsoft is fiddling with the local accounts settings in Windows 10 and this new iteration is the company’s most flagrant attempt. So, the PS5 is on its way, and it’s going head-to-head with the equally next-gen Xbox Series X console. And while it’s tempting to look at the hefty PS4 sales figures as a sign that Sony’s dominance will continue, there is one area that the Xbox One clearly overtook, and that’s backward compatibility. A Buffalo mother is warning all parents about the TikTok App. She says there is a hidden danger for young children and teenagers who might be on this app.

    Massive Asteroids, Voyager 1's photos, Windows Update Overhauls, And MWC 2020

    Not long after Valentine's Day ends, a massive asteroid estimated to be between 1,443 feet and 3,248 feet long will pass by Earth around 6:05 a.m. ET on Saturday. Based on the size range, it could be anywhere between the size of a suspension bridge to taller than a skyscraper. On Feb. 14, 1990, NASA's Voyager 1 probe snapped a photo of Earth from 3.7 billion miles (6 billion kilometers) away. The image shows our home planet as it truly is — a tiny, lonely outpost of life in an incomprehensibly vast cosmos — and became iconic as a result. At its Microsoft 365 Developer Day, the company detailed Windows 10X, it’s next-generation “expression” of Windows 10 which the company will release later this year. And the most remarkable aspect: Microsoft states that Windows 10X updates will take less than 90 seconds to complete. The world’s biggest phone show, Mobile World Congress, is no longer taking place this year. After coronavirus threatened to throw MWC into chaos, the GSM Association (GSMA), which organizes the show, has now canceled it. It comes after more than a week of exhibitors and companies pulling out of MWC.
