Unemployment

Plodding Along

In 2012, Mike Smith was 'made redundant' from his job at Coryton Oil Refinery in Essex, along with his hundreds of colleagues when the plant closed down. Aged 50, and unemployed for the first time in his adult life, Mike was faced with the anxiety-inducing issues many people are facing in Britain in 2021 - how do you manage your mental health while supporting a family, looking for work, and coming to terms with being labelled as 'redundant'?

In episode 2 of Plodding Along, Mike talks host Liam Smith, his son, through the mental health issues he faced during this challenging time.
