Ep. 282: The Week in Beauty; A new Sephora store in the UK, transforming Cristin Milioti into Sofia Falcone in HBO’s The Penguin, plus Meet the Founder with Denise Vasi of Maed Beauty

It's a Week in Beauty and what a week it’s been – there’s a new Sephora in my hometown of Birmingham here in the UK and we’ve seen the finale of hit HBO show The Penguin which has given us a brand new super villain in the form of Sofia Falcone, also known as Sofia Gigante. I had to talk about this show because the actress playing Sofia, Cristin Milioti, goes through a stunning transformation thanks to the hair, makeup and wardrobe teams. Also I’ve got a new meet the founder interview with model and actress Denise Vasi, founder of Maed Beauty, which is all about skincare for your lips. Be sure to let me know if you’ve watched The Penguin and what you thought of this episode over on Threads @charisse_kenion or @charisse_kenion on Instagram. And don't forget to follow the show on Spotify, Apple or wherever else you like to listen – this way you’ll never miss another episode and we get to build a real community together! There's also my newsletter, which is free to read over at beautymenotes.substack.com. Ep. 281: How iconic beauties of the ‘70s and the fashion and music of the ‘90s inspired makeup artist James Boehmer to dream, discover and create

Today’s guest is makeup artist James Boehmer, whose dreams took him from St. Louis, Missouri, to New York, to Japan – working at one of the most influential makeup brands in the world: Nars. In this episode James shares how he got to where he is today but also shares where he started, as a little queer kid growing up in St. Louis and watching glamazons such as Donna Summer and Debbie Harry on television. James shares some amazing stories from the late ‘90s when he first began working for Nars and how his entire life changed when he began working in Japan after the brand was purchased by Shiseido in 2000. James also shares on the differences between living and working in hectic Manhattan to the quieter, slower surroundings of Connecticut and how he’s finding the early days of opening a new store, Peggy Mercury. EDIT: In the episode intro I say that James moved to Japan; this is not the case. Although he travelled there often throughout his role at Shiseido, he was never a resident. It's the episode I didn't think I was going to make, because I didn't think I would end up watching the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show making its comeback. In this episode I'm sharing a brief history of the brand before sharing my first impressions, and then I go through the show itself moment by moment. Finally I share my highs to balance out the lows. The second segment is an interview with Amy Gordinier, the founder of Skinfix and an entrepreneur who’s focused on giving all of us our best skin ever.
