Catching up with Mitchell Suchner of ArkPad

For our new season of the Seasteading Today Podcast, we are doing something a little different. We have been hosting monthly Seasteading Social events for a couple years with a guest speaker to talk about their work that is related to seasteading. This year, we moved those events to the TSI Discord Server and are recording them for this podcast. Unfortunately, the audio quality of these first two episodes is a little rough, but the conversations are inspiring, so I hope you’ll enjoy them anyway! Future episodes will have much cleaner audio. In January of 2023, we talked with Mitchell Suchner, founder of ArkPad, about building structures in the Philippines and their business strategy. Mitchell explains that the design for their structure has completely changed, to honor his commitment to build modular structures that can be used as legos. He has also split ArkPad from ArkTide and set up shop in the Philippines because of the availability of workers and Freeports, a lot of tourism. They will start with marketing the ArkPad structures to hotels and resorts near shallow water. ArkPad is also using blockchain technology to finance the building of ArkPad structures. Mitchell explains his passion for using blockchain to decentralize power and ownership to allow more people to invest in floating real estate. See pictures of the ArkPad design on the #ArkPad channel of our Discord server. Audio editing by Lyka Sherylle Mae Rambac. Comprehensive Seasteading with Arktide

In this episode of the Seasteading Today podcast, our host Carly Jackson talks with the team at Arktide. Ben Silone is the CEO and Co-Founder; Mike Doty is an Advisor and Co-founder; and Mitchell Suchner is the Chief Operating Officer. Arktide is working to build floating 1076 square foot platforms for residential, tourism, and business. They are also competing in the Carbon Removal Xprize, using OTEC technology and aquaculture to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The Arktide structure is a flat, square, platform, engineered to handle five meter waves, which means it is ready for both coastal waters and the deep ocean. Their goal is for an all around unit that has broad application. The prototype platform is 32ft by 32ft, and up to 10ft above the water; and will start with a small home on top. These platforms can be joined together to create acres of space, and large structures, communities, and cities.  In this interview, we also discuss how blockchain technology can be used to track ownership and leasing of space on the floating platforms.  Non Fungible Tokens (NFTs) are popular at the moment for digital art, but they can also be used to record ownership of an asset, in the same way a title records ownership of a house or car. Blockchain technology can also be used in smart contracts, or DAOs, similar to a Home Owners’ Association governing documents. **Update** At the time of the recording, the plan was to allow people to stake their Solar tokens in exchange for ARKT. While Arktide will implement blockchain technology in the future, it will likely look different than described on the podcast. Also note that a number of design changes have occurred to allow for greater flexibility in the type and style of structures used on these platforms. Read the transcript of this interview here. Changing Society with Ethos Island

Will Otey and Jan Spiekermann were already interested in micronations before they became Ambassadors for The Seasteading Institute. They met on one of our monthly Ambassador calls and decided to start Ethos Island. After years of learning about classical liberal philosophy and activism, Will came to the conclusion that the best way to change governance is to start over. Jan also has the desire to change society for the better. He got involved with the micronation community and the Transhumanist Party. Zoltan Istvan who founded the Transhumanist Party is a former Ambassador for The Seasteading Institute. Will predicts that a proliferation of new countries will develop, creating an environment in which an evolution of governance can take place. Will and Jan wanted to see a new kind of project in the seasteading movement, one that would not require working with existing governments and is affordable. They expect their Ethos Island development to be funded in the same way that condo developments are funded on land. Prospective seasteaders will put down a deposit to cover the high upfront costs, but at the end of the process they will own their own seastead property. Ethos Island has three stages: * Online community* Boat Harbor* Seastead They expect that moving from life on land to life on the ocean will require a big psychological shift, as well as logistical shifts. With their three stages, members of Ethos Island can get acclimated to ocean life incrementally and with the support of a community. Ethos Island governance will be based on natural law, the non-aggression principle, and private governance. You can learn more about Ethos Island on their website.
